The Data Centre Community is looking for an extraordinary individual with proven and tested leadership and management skills as a leader in our data Centre operations organisation in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia as a Data Centre Operations (DCO) Cluster Manager. Data Centre Operations Cluster Manager is one of our most senior management roles in the data Centre environment. In this role, you will be responsible for leading a large organization, managing managers who own data Centre infrastructure including the operational availability of network and server systems at scale. The pace, scale, and growth of Amazon’s data Centre platform will challenge you. Our uncompromisingly high standards as we continually seek to innovate on behalf of our customers will push you to new levels of creativity. At this level, Amazon is unique in that we seek experienced senior leaders who have evolved to be highly strategic in their approach to managing their business unit yet understand how to lead large teams by example who will not hesitate to roll up their sleeves when tactical needs dictate it. The ideal candidate for this role will understand data centre IT infrastructure and Amazon Web Services and understand how the two coexist. Key job responsibilities • Lead and supervise a team of Data Centre Managers (3-9 area and front-line managers) and 50-100 employees within Regional Data Centres. • Accountability for meeting and exceeding operational goals. Owning the performance goals and objectives relating to safety, security, availability, scaling, and efficiency in support of our data centre operations. • Carry out managerial and leadership responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures. • Strategic planning and forecasting; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; resolve problems; and address staffing needs. • Develop, improve, and share operational best practices across the globe. • Obsess over team learning and development, both from a technical/functional and soft skills (critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and adaptability) development perspective including mentoring and training. • Hiring, managing, and developing the operations management team including data Centre managers and data Centre operations technicians. • Planning and executing the Infrastructure Operations component of new AWS data Centre build-outs, new colocation build-outs, AWS data Centre expansions, and colocation expansions, including the network and server rack infrastructure to facilitate the daily operations. • Experience in successful insourcing and/or outsourcing specific task balancing internal skillsets with frugality. • Continuous improvement of operational processes, procedures, methods, and tools. A day in the life A typical day at AWS is that there is no typical day, the business is constantly changing and as a leader in this space you daily involves helping smooth out change cycles This position is both working with global partners and managing local leaders so spending time between both spaces daily is a must. A leader in this space has the daily flexibility to understand what is most important at that moment and flex in and out of those meetings. We work hard, have fun and make historydaily. We support all AWS data Centres and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion. - Bachelor's degree or above in computer science, computer engineering, or related field, or experience managing teams - 7 years of team management experience - 5 years of operations management experience - 4 years of professional work experience, or experience in technical work related to computer systems and technology components - Experience with budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis - Experience with six sigma tools and Lean techniques - Experience in identifying security issues and risks, and developing mitigation plans - Experience developing and managing a high-performing team - Experience communicating technical details verbally and in writing - Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing & Continuous Improvement principles & techniques - Network & Hardware Systems: knowledge of network scaling and hardware systems - Server & Storage Technologies: Deep understanding of server and storage technologies - Knowledge of MEP Infrastructure: data Centre MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) Infrastructure including Power, Cooling & Facilities Management - Process Improvement: Knowledge of data Centre operations, processes and continuous process improvement - Large-Scale Services: Experience managing large-scale technological services Acknowledgement of country: In the spirit of reconciliation Amazon acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community.
