Junior Mechanical Engineer – Building Services (HVAC)

The Role
We are seeking a motivated Junior Mechanical Engineer to join our growing boutique building services consultancy in Sydney. This role is ideal for a graduate or early-career engineer who is keen to develop strong technical foundations in mechanical (HVAC) design while working closely with experienced senior engineers on a diverse range of projects.
You will contribute to the delivery of high-quality mechanical services designs across multiple sectors while developing your skills in coordination, documentation, client interaction, and construction support.

Key Responsibilities
Under the guidance of senior engineers, your responsibilities will include:
* Assisting with mechanical services (HVAC) design and analysis using industry-standard software packages
* Supporting the delivery of multi-disciplinary projects, working closely with hydraulic, electrical, fire protection, and architectural teams
* Assisting with project planning and internal coordination for allocated tasks and work packages
* Identifying potential design risks and escalating them to senior team members
* Preparing mechanical design documentation, including:
* Design basis spatial planning
* Scopes of work
* Technical specifications
* Equipment schedule and matrix
* Design calculations and reports
* Liaising with clients and project stakeholders to clarify requirements and respond to queries, with senior engineer support
* Attending project meetings and assisting with mechanical representation under supervision
* Applying mechanical engineering skills across a variety of project types, including:
* Residential
* Commercial
* Hospital
* Fit out and refurbishment
* Participating in design reviews, safety-in-design workshops, and risk assessments
* Assisting with construction phase support, including:
* Responses to RFIs
* Review of contractor submittals
* Site inspections and meeting attendance
* Design revisions and change management
* Undertaking discipline checks on drawings and documentation as part of quality assurance processes
* Coordinating with CAD and Revit drafting teams to support project-specific deliverables

About You
You will have:
* A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
* A strong interest in HVAC and building services engineering
* Basic to intermediate experience with cooling and heating load calculations (e.g. ACADS-BSG CAMEL or similar)
* A developing understanding of relevant Australian standards, regulations, and legislations including AS and AS 4254
* Awareness of interfaces between mechanical systems and other building services disciplines
* An interest in learning project delivery and consultancy processes
* Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to contribute to technical reports
* A professional, proactive attitude and willingness to learn
* The ability to work both independently on allocated tasks and collaboratively within a team
* Confidence to ask questions and propose solutions
* Exposure to Autodesk Revit or BIM workflows (preferred but not essential)
