Primary objective
In consultation with the Darwin Horticulture Team Leader, this position will assist in the development, maintenance and
application of a range of extension activities in Horticulture. This position will also undertake some research and
development activities on issues of current relevance to Territory's mango industry.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Actively participate in the development of horticulture extension plans by liaising with key internal and external
stakeholders (primary producers, industry representatives and researchers) and maintain the extension calendar of
events.
1. Actively participate in the planning and implementation of extension activities, in accordance with DAF's vision, mission
and objectives This will involve the conduct of extension activities (production of extension material, one-to-one farm
visits, field days, demonstration sites and extension-related social media content).
1. Assist in the planning and performance of all aspects of research and development activities based on NT horticulture
industry needs to assist agricultural enterprises throughout the Northern Territory.
1. Collect and collate data associated with research, development and extension projects and prepare basic reports.
2. Assist in writing and publication of articles for industry, to promote adoption of new technologies and methodologies
that maximise profitability and sustainability.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Degree in agriculture, horticulture or another relevant/equivalent degree.
2. Sound knowledge and understanding of agricultural extension in Australia.
3. Experience and willingness to carry out field work in tropical environmental conditions.
4. Proven ability to communicate effectively with primary producers, industry representatives and researchers to
encourage sharing and effective use of complementary knowledge and skills within multidisciplinary project teams.
5. Contemporary knowledge and skills in the operation of computer systems including spreadsheets, databases, word
processing and statistical software relevant to the position.
6. Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team, and without supervision.
1. An ability to plan, prioritise and conduct work with flexibility. Ability to adapt to changes in duties and priorities, and to
meet deadlines
8. C class drivers licence.
Desirable
1. Experience working in Horticulture industry in northern Australia.
Further information
This position may require a considerable amount of travel to rural properties across the Northern Territory.
