Colac Area Health is a unique, integrated health service comprising over 500 employees, providing Acute Care, Aged Care and Community and Allied Health Services to a catchment population of approximately 30,000. Position Summary
This role is responsible for providing effective supervised day‐to‐day clinical management of both ambulatory and admitted patients/residents/clients within Colac Area Health whilst fulfilling Medical Board of Australia pre‐registration training requirements.
Primary Objectives
Urgent Care:The Urgent Care Department delivers a 24‐hour emergency service to the Colac Otway Shire and its visitors, treating approximately 10,000 patients a year. The department is staffed by a dedicated team of nursing professionals 24 hours a day. Medical care is provided in collaboration with local General Practitioners, Accredited Emergency Registrars, Hospital Medical Officers, Nurse Practitioners and medical imaging and pathology services as required.Acute Ward:The Acute Ward offers a broad range of patient care for medical, surgical, midwifery and palliative admissions. The inpatient Acute Ward consists of 35 beds including maternity services and three dialysis chairs. Visiting hours for non‐midwifery patients are 11.00 am‐12.30 pm and 2.00 pm‐8.00 pm. A patient rest period is observed from 12.30 pm‐2.00 pm.
Role Responsibilities
* Provision of Clinical Care – Provide direct and indirect patient care in accordance with the Medical Board of Australia, Colac Area Health and Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors. Use evidence‐based practice and current literature in decision making. Actively understand and apply informed consent, deliver consumer‐centred care, respect patient values, customs and spiritual beliefs, and maintain privacy and confidentiality.Perform basic life support techniques, airway management, ventilatory and circulatory support, and common procedures as per the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors.
* Teamwork – Establish and maintain effective communication within a multi‐disciplinary team and with other relevant teams to ensure patients receive quality ongoing care. Treat patients with respect and courtesy, provide clear and honest information, and adopt behaviours that prevent or minimise patient complaints.
* Patient Care Standards and Clinical Skills – Safely and competently perform the common procedures listed in the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors. Provide quality patient care using an evidence‐based approach in line with Colac Area Health policy and procedure. Maintain accurate medical records and adhere to legal requirements concerning health records and timely documentation.
* Professional Development – Employ self‐directed learning, identify and address learning needs, demonstrate commitment to continuous learning, participate in unit meetings and educational sessions, and seek and provide supervision and feedback.
* Managing Information – Liaise with legal and statutory authorities, including mandatory reporting where applicable. Demonstrate recognition of ethical complexities of medical practice, follow professional and ethical codes, and comply with information privacy and health records policies.
* Quality and Safety Practice – Practice in accordance with National Safety and Quality Standards, the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors, and the professional code of conduct for medical practice. Provide and maintain a safe working environment, participate in the Quality Improvement Register, and comply with the Colac Area Health Clinical Training Plan for Junior Medical Staff.
* Other Duties – Exhibit commitment to Colac Area Health values, report all incidents through RISKMAN, undertake duties in accordance with relevant healthcare or industry standards, and participate in quality improvement activities. Perform special projects or reports required by supervising consultant or District Director Medical Administration.
Key Performance Indicators
* Provision of Clinical Care: Demonstrated compliance with Medical Board of Australia, Colac Area Health and Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors standards, policies and guidelines; assessment of urgent and non‐urgent patients within 30 minutes and 2 hours respectively; accurate medical records; compliance with informed consent principles.
* Patient Care Standards and Clinical Skills: Demonstrated competency in basic life support techniques; 100 % personal compliance with hospital policies and protocols; performance of medical and surgical procedures under supervision; timely discharge summaries.
* Professional Development: Attendance at required tutorials and grand rounds; submission of Junior Doctor End of Rotation Assessment Forms, Mid‐Term Assessment Forms and Clinical Rotation Evaluations; completion of BLS/ALS/PLS check programs.
* Managing Information: 100 % compliance with information management policies and privacy; completion of discharge summaries on day of discharge.
* Quality and Safety: Adherence to National Safety Quality Standards; active participation in Quality Improvement Register; compliance with the Colac Area Health Clinical Training Plan.

Key Selection Criteria
* Essential Qualifications – Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery: Australian/New Zealand Graduate or fully qualified AMC graduate. Demonstrated relevant experience (minimum 3 years) as a Hospital Medical Officer in a hospital setting with at least 1 year in the Australian healthcare system; General registration (unconditional) with AHPRA, no restrictions; Current Basic Life Support; Right to work in Australia.
* Desirable Attributes – Clinical experience in regional or rural Australian settings; commitment to rural or regional health with established links to community.
