The opportunity
The Operator / Maintenance Technician will operate across both Li-S Energy's research and production facilities.
The role, based at the Waurn Ponds campus of Deakin University, will report to the Senior Production Development Manager and have the following key responsibilities.
Manufacturing
Operate key lithium-sulfur cell manufacturing equipment within an ultra-low humidity dry-room.
Prepare materials (electrodes, sub-components) in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and quality standards.
Record production data, monitor equipment performance and product quality, and escalate deviations.
Maintenance
Perform scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance on mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
Maintain plant and facility equipment, replacing worn components to minimise downtime.
Maintain accurate maintenance records and ensure compliance with organisational and regulatory requirements.
Diagnose and repair faults across automated and semi-automated manufacturing systems.
Respond promptly to equipment failures to minimise production disruption.
Work with engineers to resolve complex issues and implement corrective actions.
Support installation, commissioning, calibration, and integration of new equipment and processes.
Manufacture jigs, fixtures, and ancillary components to support process improvements.
Assess equipment performance and contribute to continuous improvement and upgrade initiatives.
Safety & compliance
Follow all safety protocols, particularly for hazardous materials and dry-room operations.
Ensure all manufacturing and maintenance activities meet OHS requirements.
Promote a proactive and positive safety culture.
Education
Trade qualification in Mechanical Fitting, Machinist, Industrial Maintenance, or related field.
Experience
5+ years in manufacturing, production, or pilot-scale environments.
Experience with automated systems, precision equipment, and material-handling systems.
Hands-on experience in mechanical repairs, machine operation, commissioning, and fabrication (incl. CAD, machining, or rapid prototyping).
Technical Skills
Strong mechanical and electrical diagnostic ability.
Ability to interpret technical drawings, schematics, and manuals.
Knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, and vacuum systems.
Understanding of hazardous materials handling.
General Attributes
Strong problem-solving ability and practical, hands-on mindset.
High attention to detail with the ability to recognise equipment and quality issues.
Effective communicator; able to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
