General Counsel and Deputy Commissioner – Legal and Assurance NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission Permanent Applications are required by 13 May 2026.
Responsibilities
Lead the Legal and Assurance Division to provide the full range of in‑house legal services.
Work nationally, based at one of the NDIS Commission’s State or Territory offices, supporting a flexible and hybrid working arrangement.
Perform duties under the Senior Executive Service Band 2 classification.
About the Organisation and Role The NDIS Commission was created following the amendment to the National Disability Insurance Scheme Act 2013 (NDIS Act) in 2017 and began operating in 2018. By the end of 2020, it was operating in every state and territory.
The Commission’s role is to ensure people with disability receive safe, high‑quality supports and services through the NDIS. Above all, it protects the rights of people with disability so they can live safely and access quality supports and services.
The General Counsel reports to the Associate Commissioner and Chief Legal Counsel and is a member of the NQSC Executive Management Group. The General Counsel leads the Legal and Assurance Division to provide a full range of in‑house legal services to support the regulatory and corporate functions of the NQSC.
The appointee will apply expert knowledge of the legislation under which the NQSC performs its functions, and of human rights law, particularly as it relates to people with disability. The role includes providing timely, expert, authoritative, and strategic advice and counsel to the Commissioner on critical legal and legislative issues, including strategic litigation initiatives.
Qualifications
Demonstrated experience at the General Counsel level or equivalent in a government agency or relevant private sector organisation.
Extensive professional and technical legal expertise, including an understanding of human rights law.
Proven capacity to lead senior and experienced legal teams across a diversity of areas, particularly in relation to regulatory activities and litigation.
