About the Opportunity
Australia's Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) is the home of Australia's most significant landmark and national infrastructure for research, supporting thousands of scientists from industry and academia with access to state‑of‑the‑art scientific and research instruments. ANSTO is seeking a Senior Risk Engineer to lead hazard identification activities, quantitative risk assessments and systems safety analysis across major projects and operational assets, including ANSTO's new Nuclear Medicine Manufacturing Facility (NMMF).
This position plays a central role in the development and review of safety assessments, engineering analyses and technical documentation used for internal decision‑making and regulatory submissions to ARPANSA and other authorities. The Senior Risk Engineer will operate within a highly skilled multi‑disciplinary environment alongside electrical engineers, process safety specialists, instrumentation and controls engineers and reliability professionals.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Technical Background
* Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering or equivalent, with eligibility for Engineers Australia membership.
* Significant operational experience in complex, high‑consequence, or tightly regulated engineered environments.
Core Technical Capabilities
* Proven proficiency in leading HAZOPs and applying structured hazard identification methodologies (FMEA, LOPA, FTA).
* Expertise in quantitative risk assessments, deterministic and probabilistic analyses, and applying analytical models to support engineering justification and safety case development.
* Advanced capability in preparing technical documentation: safety analyses, risk evaluations, engineering justifications and regulatory submissions.
* Ability to interpret complex systems, assess safety implications of operational or engineering changes, and communicate evidence‑based recommendations to multidisciplinary stakeholders.
Professional Attributes
* Strong stakeholder engagement skills across engineering, project management, operational and regulatory interfaces.
* Operationally focused engineering mindset with practical, real‑world problem‑solving in high‑consequence systems.
* Commitment to scientific accuracy, technical integrity and the highest standards of safety.
Highly Regarded (Not Essential)
* Experience in nuclear, radiological, radioactive waste or other high‑reliability engineered systems (considered a valuable asset but not a prerequisite).
Eligibility Requirements
* Must be an Australian citizen to work in a security‑regulated environment.
* Must be willing to undergo a security clearance check.
Your Duties & Responsibilities
o Conduct independent safety assessments of facilities, systems, plant, equipment and experiments, using recognised hazard and risk assessment methodologies.
o Lead complex, multi‑disciplinary risk engineering projects, including novel assessments for emerging facilities or operational assets.
o Apply and advance risk, reliability and systems safety engineering methods to inform design development and operational decision‑making.
o Prepare and critically review technical documentation, including safety analyses, risk evaluations, engineering reports and regulatory submissions.
o Provide systems safety analysis and expert advice on design modifications, change management and risk mitigation strategies.
o Support ANSTO's Safety Management System, including policies, procedures and assurance activities.
o Evaluate cost, benefit and risk implications of engineering solutions and advise on optimal pathways balancing operational, safety and regulatory requirements.
o Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and analysts.
How to apply
o Submit your up‑to‑date resume with covering letter addressing your suitability to the role against the above selection criteria.
