Primary objective
Provide strategic policy advice to the Director Environment and Climate Policy, Executive Director Environment and Heritage and
agency on environment policy and reforms to protect the environment and promote sustainability for the Northern Territory.
Coordinate interagency and whole of government participation on strategic environment policy development including legislative
reform and other policy matters.
Context statement
Environment and Climate Policy is a small team with a focus on development and implementation of policies that protect the
environment and promote sustainability within the Northern Territory. The range of policy includes climate change, environment
protection, sustainability and other initiatives emerging at the local, national and international level. The team works collaboratively
within the agency to support regulatory reforms, as well as with other Government agencies to develop, deliver and report on the
Northern Territory’s commitments.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide critical evidence-based analysis, advice on strategic and policy issues related to environment protection.
2. Represent the Department and develop and maintain effective collaborative partnerships with relevant internal and external
stakeholders at local, national and international levels.
3. Lead cross agency and key stakeholder coordination, policy design and project management for the development of complex
policies, strategies and initiatives.
4. Analyse and research trends and innovations in environment policy nationally and internationally and provide advice on their
possible implementation in the Territory environment.
5. Prepare a range of high-level documentation on policy issues and legislation, including drafting instructions, Ministerial, Cabinet
and Legislative Assembly briefs.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Highly developed expertise and experience in policy research, legal or comparable policy areas, critical analysis and provision
of high-level strategic policy advice, demonstrating strong conceptual and analytical skills with ability to identify new policy
approaches.
2. Excellent demonstrated oral and written communication skills with proven ability to prepare briefings, reports and
correspondence on complex matters for a wide range of audiences in plain English.
3. Proven collaborative skills with the demonstrated ability to establish and sustain productive working relationships with
stakeholders at all levels, and with people of diverse cultures.
4. Demonstrated ability to plan and manage multiple high-level projects, including delivering outcomes in an environment of
competing priorities and tight deadlines.
5. Demonstrated experience and understanding of contemporary and strategic departmental, intergovernmental and federal
environment issues with the ability to provide sound, risk-based recommendations to address these issues.
6. Ability to work as part of a small professional team with minimal supervision, in a challenging workplace with stringent
deadlines to deliver high quality outcomes including a ‘can-do’ attitude.
Desirable
1. Relevant tertiary qualification in law, workplace, or relevant public policy area.
