The role
The Team

Launceston General Hospital (LGH) is the major acute referral hospital for Northern Tasmania, with the Emergency Department providing 24/7 care to a broad regional community. The team works closely with medical, nursing, allied health, Ambulance Tasmania, inpatient and community services to deliver safe, timely and patient‐centred emergency care.

The Role

The Director – Emergency Medicine provides senior clinical and strategic leadership for the Emergency Department, working in partnership with nursing and medical leaders to support safe care, patient flow, workforce planning, clinical governance and service improvement.

Qualifications and Experience
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in Emergency Medicine.
  • Contemporary senior medical experience in Emergency Medicine, with advanced clinical judgement and decision‐making skills in a complex acute setting.
  • Proven leadership, communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to lead service delivery, workforce planning, clinical governance, safety, quality and performance improvement.

Details of Appointment
  • Fixed term, full time, day worker position, working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing as soon as possible for a three‐year period. Hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.
  • For a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full‐time, part‐time and casual vacancies.
Salary and Benefits

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1‐3 salary range: $222,789 – $319,701 per annum, pro rata, plus 12% superannuation and access to salary packaging. Salary range aligns with the Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award. Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2025.

  • Salary packaging options include living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment per year.
  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle or motor vehicle allowance of $28,786 per annum.
  • Participation in Private Practice Scheme 35% or allowance in lieu of private practice schemes 35%, subject to approval.
  • Management Allowance up to 20% applied to this role.
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $17,483 per annum, pro rata.
  • Travel and relocation assistance support available up to $10,000 for appointees from interstate.
  • Professional development and accelerated pathways.
  • Range of leave entitlements, including study leave and Professional Development Support.
  • Fitness Passport — access to 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for $14.50 per week per person or $28.05 for a family.
Eligibility
  • Holds specialist registration, or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) on the specialist pathway, or
  • Is a registered Medical Practitioner who is an IMG with a recognised overseas specialist qualification and assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.
  • Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable).
