Assistant director - australian defence consulting

Sydney
Defence Australia
Deputy Director
Posted: 23 April
Offer description

An exciting opportunity exists within Defence's internal consulting team for a high-performing consultant to deliver consulting projects across the Defence Portfolio. This is a consulting role unlike any other. It offers the opportunity to deliver meaningful work that has a national impact, without commercial pressures or financial targets. As an internal peer to Defence clients, you can build trust quickly, remove barriers, and delivery high value work that directly supports Defence's mission and outcomes.

As an Assistant Director (this role is equivalent to a Manager / Senior Manager/Engagement Manager at a private consulting firm) within the Defence Consulting team, you will be accountable for the end to end delivery of consulting engagements, applying rigorous structured problem solving approaches to address high impact challenges facing Defence. You will combine leading private sector consulting practices with a strong understanding of Defence's mission, context, and operating environment.

You will work in diverse Defence Consulting teams alongside civilian and uniformed personnel to deliver high quality, evidence based solutions to senior stakeholders and help uplift consulting capability across Defence.

Day to day, you will lead and manage consulting engagements from problem definition through to delivering practical, evidence based outputs such as guidebooks, tools, reports, and actionable insights. This includes translating unclear or complex issues into structured work plans, overseeing analysis across multiple work streams, managing risks and dependencies, and meeting Defence Business Area requirements. You will produce clear, compelling, and executive ready outputs that stand up to senior Defence and Government scrutiny.

You will lead small high performing teams, providing clear direction and coaching. You will enable quality assurance and role model the professional standards expected of Defence Consulting. In addition to delivering project outcomes, you will actively contribute to building capability across Defence by transferring consulting skills, methods, and ways of working to business areas in which you operate.

You will also contribute to shaping how Defence Consulting operates by refining delivery approaches and building practical intellectual capital, such as tools, methods, and templates that can be applied directly within client projects to deliver consistent and market quality outcomes for Defence.

About our Team

The Defence Consulting team was established in January 2025 to deliver internal consulting services for the Department of Defence. The team is dedicated to delivering market quality consulting capability, and strengthening the APS-ADF workforce, by building enduring capability across various business areas.

Defence Consulting is not here to displace private consulting support and do work which otherwise would have gone to the market. It is here to rapidly deploy critical capability to deliver short term strategic priorities across Defence, uplift capability and reduce the use of and reliance on external consulting firms where it makes sense to do so. Much of this will be achieved not just by doing projects but by enabling areas of Defence to be self-sufficient by transferring leading consulting practices and knowledge to the APS and ADF workforce.

Our vision is to make Defence a coherent, informed buyer and user of external support. We focus on how our unique capabilities can differentiate and add the most value for Defence. We support the organisation to get ever better at using private consulting support, where it makes sense to do so, in the right way for the most value.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our criteria for an ideal candidate:

* A proven ability to deliver complex projects or other client focused outputs to a high standard in a consulting or related professional environment.
* Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities, including logical reasoning, creative thinking, applied to effective engagement with clients and stakeholders. This supported by clear written and verbal communication skills.
* A demonstrated commitment to sharing knowledge, developing others, and contributing to the growth and maturity of a consulting capability within the organisation.
* Ability to lead and bring out the best in small teams, including mentoring, coaching, managing expectations.
* A strong alignment with Defence's mission, demonstrating the integrity, professionalism, and behaviors expected of APS and Defence Values.
