Primary objective
Patient Care Assistant's work under the direction and supervision (either direct or indirect) of an allocated Nurse/Midwife to provide high
quality, culturally sensitive nursing/midwifery care to patients, guided by an approved 'RDPH roles and responsibilities' scope of practice.
Context statement
A Patient Care Assistant (PCA) is employed as part of the multi-disciplinary health care team, which is responsible for patient care,
supervision and practice. The provision of safe patient care is a shared responsibility. PCA's work under the direction and supervision
(either direct or indirect) of an allocated Nurse/Midwife in providing patient care and performing non-clinical tasks to support service
delivery in a clinical setting. PCA's are responsible for working within their scope of practice and maintaining communication relevant to
patient care outcomes and other relevant tasks associated to service delivery.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Work under the direct/indirect supervision of an RN/RM/EN, assist in the delivery of high-quality patient centred care, which may
include the handling of bodily fluids and care of the deceased.
2. Obtains support and advice regarding performance expectations, management of patients and application of policies and procedure
from the RN/RM as required.
3. Preserve patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality.
4. Foster a positive workplace culture through role modelling appropriate behaviour.
5. Follows defined service quality standards, Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated experience in the delivery of patient care in an acute or primary healthcare setting
2. Confident written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills to contribute positively to the patient experience and the
multidisciplinary team.
3. Demonstrated understanding, awareness, and ability (under the supervision of an RN/RM) to prioritise and provide safe patient care.
4. Demonstrated understanding of the impact of social and cultural challenges experienced by vulnerable groups/communities and the
role of the patient care assistant in supporting them
5. Preparedness and capacity to work shift work rostered to meet the requirements of the organisation, and be redeployed to other
clinical areas to meet organisational needs
6. Knowledge and application of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) principles in a health care setting
Desirable
1. Certificate III in Health Services Assistant or similar
2. NT Drivers Licence

1. The preferred or recommended applicant will be required to hold a current working with children clearance notice and undergo a
criminal history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to the position. This role
carries specific immunisation requirements. To be eligible for appointment you will be required to meet the immunisation requirements

2. Palmerston Regional Hospital is the primary place of employment; however staff may be requested to work at other sites such as Royal
Darwin Hospital or Nightcliff Renal Unit according to operational needs. Applicants requesting 0.84FTE (128 hours per roster) will be
considered. All positions are based on rotating rosters, applicants are required to work all three shifts. *************** start times)
