The Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health (SMAH) comprises of the Schools of Science; Medical, Indigenous and Health Sciences; Nursing; Psychology and the Graduate School of Medicine. The School of Science (SSCI) teaches and conducts research in Biomedical Sciences including Biochemistry, Molecular Biophysics, Microbiology and Cell and Molecular Biology, all disciplines of Chemistry including Atmospheric, Medicinal and Environmental Chemistry, as well as Conservation Biology, Earth Surface Processes, Ecology, Ecotoxicology, Environmental Science, Earth systems, Marine Biology and Spatial Sciences.


About the role

We are seeking a Technical Officer to provide high quality support for undergraduate teaching, helping ensure laboratories, facilities, and equipment are well maintained and ready for use. You'll prepare teaching laboratories and resources in consultation with Subject Coordinators and support the day to day operation of teaching spaces. You'll also support undergraduate field trips by assisting with planning and logistics, including documentation, bookings, preparation of equipment, and driving University vehicles.

About you

You will have completed study in a related discipline such as Geology, Geoscience, Earth Science or Environmental Science, or bring an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience using optical microscopes and associated software is essential, along with familiarity managing spatial data and working with GIS platforms (ArcGIS preferred; QGIS/R desirable). Experience supporting undergraduate fieldwork or research, including trip planning and safety, and confidence using a range of technologies and operating systems is also required.

Special job requirements


* This position is not suitable for remote work in accordance with the UOW Remote Working Guidelines.
* May be required to work outside standard business hours or occasionally weekends, as dictated by the Laboratory Timetable and/or operational requirements (such as for practicals, fieldtrips/camps, community engagement activities).
* The position may be required to assist with field trips that could involve being outdoors all day and walking long distances carrying equipment.
* Biological, chemical and manual handling in a risk-controlled environment will be a part of this role.
* This position requires a pre-employment medical be undertaken to demonstrate satisfactory fitness to undertake the physical requirements of this position.
* The position must hold an Australian Drivers Licence and be required to obtain a NSW Bus License (LR).
* Maintain First Aid certificate during tenure of position or willingness to obtain.
