Reporting to the Operational Safety Manager, this position plays a critical role in enhancing the safety culture and operational competence of Protection Officers within the Public Transport Authority (PTA). The role provides expert coaching, guidance, and subject matter advice on worksite protection, ensuring consistent application of safeworking rules and procedures. It involves conducting competence assurance activities, evaluating staff performance, and delivering remedial training where necessary. The position also leads incident investigations, applies corrective actions, and supports incident response efforts to maintain a safe and compliant rail environment.

In addition to its coaching and compliance responsibilities, the role contributes to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance safeworking practices, developing tailored coaching programs, and briefing staff on procedural updates. It liaises with internal and external stakeholders, including suppliers and training teams, to align development efforts with operational needs. The role also supports risk management initiatives, participates in audits and assessments, and ensures documentation and processes meet legislative and organisational standards. This position is instrumental in driving operational excellence and safety performance across the PTA's rail network.


About You

To excel in this role, you should possess:

* Extensive field experience in Rail Safety within a railway environment, with strong understanding of technical standards and safety-related legislation.
* Proven ability to coach and develop others, fostering competence and performance in safety-critical roles.
* Skilled in planning, analysis, and incident investigation, with the ability to make safety-critical decisions and respond effectively in emergency situations.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively across all levels, combined with effective planning and coordination to work independently and meet objectives.

There are four permanent full‑time opportunities available for immediate start.

This is a pool recruitment process where suitable applicants will be placed in a pool for 12 months. Applicants assessed as suitable through this process may be used to fill similar vacancies both fixed term and permanent that may arise within the next 12 months.

To be eligible to work permanently at the PTA you must be either an Australian Citizen, have Permanent Residency status or hold a current visa with permanent working rights in Australia.
