Where You\'ll Be Working

The new Tamworth Mental Health Unit servicing the New England North West region will be opening in 2026. The brand new, purpose-built Tamworth Mental Health Unit will have 37 beds in total: 20 for general adult, 5 for high acuity, 4 for younger people and 8 for older persons. Treatment is provided by a multidisciplinary team (MDT) and incorporates medical, psychological, occupational, and social interventions. Consumers are encouraged to participate in the therapeutic group program. The program provides a daily structure and routine for consumers while in hospital, with opportunities to participate in interventions focused on engagement, socialisation, education and skills building addressing both mental and physical health.

About The Role

Psychologists on the unit provide specialised assessment and evidence-based psychological interventions for consumers experiencing a range of mental health conditions. Common referrals include anxiety and mood disorders, though psychologists also support individuals with complex presentations such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders. They contribute to multidisciplinary care planning, facilitate individual and group therapies, and offer psychoeducation to consumers and families. Psychologists also play a key role in recovery-oriented care, supporting transitions to community services and promoting consumer autonomy and wellbeing.

You will be supported in this position by your Line Manager and the Psychology Professional Lead. Regular structured clinical supervision, professional development opportunities and ongoing education are provided to support your professional development and career growth.

About You

We seek a Psychologist that thrives on advanced clinical assessment and formulation skills, proficiency in evidence‑based interventions (e.g., CBT, DBT, ACT), and strong risk assessment, suicide prevention, and de‑escalation capabilities. You should communicate clearly and compassionately, build therapeutic alliances rapidly in high‑acuity contexts, and collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to inform care plans and discharge pathways. Key attributes include cultural humility, ethical decision‑making, and professional boundaries; resilience, reflective practice, and self‑care to sustain performance under pressure; meticulous documentation and outcome monitoring; systems thinking to navigate complex services and advocate for patients; and a person‑centred, recovery‑oriented approach that integrates family/carer engagement and trauma‑informed care.

Requirements

* Current registration as a Psychologist with Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
* Completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited postgraduate clinical psychology qualification of no less than two years full time duration or recognised equivalent, displayed on the Psychology Board of Australia website.
