The whole world needs you; you can be a Geriatrician anywhere, but what's different about Tasmania is our culture and lifestyle. Come and work in a meaningful place.

Royal Hobart Hospital and the Department of Geriatric Medicine are seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for a Staff Specialist – Geriatric Medicine vacancy.

Who are we?

The Royal Hobart Hospital is a tertiary hospital in southern Tasmania, serving a population of 300,000. It is Tasmania's largest hospital and a major referral centre. As the major clinical teaching and research centre, RHH collaborates with the University of Tasmania and other institutions.

Role

The Aged Care department at RHH has 106 inpatient beds for acute older persons' care across three sites in central Hobart—60 acute care beds, 36 subacute beds (Geriatric Evaluation and Management), plus 10 beds for patients with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia requiring slow‐stream rehabilitation, and an additional 12‐bed GEM at‐home service.

There is a strategic vision for an Older Person's Emergency Department geriatrician role. The Aged Care specialists provide multiple services to inpatients (including a consultative service and a shared care orthogeriatrics model of 10‐20 patients) and to outpatients, and they deliver a robust educational program.

Clinics and Services

Clinics include memory, falls and balance, movement disorders, geriatric oncology, continence and pain patients. All clinics involve Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and are supported by a dedicated aged‐care clinic nurse and closely associated with the Community Rehabilitation Unit, which is co‐located on site. Clinic sessions consist of a mix of face‐to‐face and telehealth (video/telephone) consultations. There is also the option to participate in regional TAZREACH outreach clinics.

Research and Education

There are opportunities to pursue research interests and experiences as part of this role. The department provides a strong education program to undergraduates, allied health, nursing and postgraduates.

Team

The aged‐care department has 9 FTE registrar positions, including up to four advanced trainees in geriatrics. The remainder are registrars in Geriatric Medicine, supported by six interns in acute geriatrics, one intern in orthogeriatrics, and six resident medical officers across the subacute services.
