We built Australia’s Collins Class submarines, sustain the Collins Class fleet, and have been selected by the Australian Government to sustain and jointly build conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines in Australia.To deliver on this new work, ASC is seeking an experienced Welding / Materials Engineer to live, work, and learn about building nuclear-powered submarines in Barrow, United Kingdom (UK).This is a unique opportunity to further your career and professional capabilities through collaborations and upskilling with world-leading industry partners.About the OpportunityThe Welding / Materials Engineer will apply their knowledge of welding standards, materials, weld procedures, and manufacturing processes to provide engineering support to the SSN-AUKUS build program. Additionally, you will utilize NDT qualifications and OQE management to ensure technical decisions are safe, practical, and suitable for implementation.Once deployed, you will be immersed in the processes and procedures required to construct an SSN AUKUS submarine. You will receive a tailored development plan, gaining exposure to world-class submarine programs, with specific rotations in Barrow to enhance your capabilities in submarine design and build.After your deployment, you will return to South Australia (SA) to carry out planning, management, and build activities on the SSN-AUKUS Submarines at the Osborne Shipyard. Living and working in South Australia is a requirement, so please consider this when applying.Successful candidates will deploy in August/September 2025.Please note this is a Civilian role, and recruitment processes will differ from those in Active Service Defence recruitment.ResponsibilitiesConduct in-depth analysis and modelling, independently addressing and resolving complex engineering issues in welding and materials across the SSN-AUKUS build program.Undertake tasks involving high complexity, including intricate organization, analysis, and processes such as complex calculations and system design.Provide technical direction throughout the lifecycle of design projects, ensuring adherence to specifications, sketches, test procedures, and engineering reports.Prepare technical reports and other engineering documents with minimal supervision.About youQualifications in Welding/Materials Engineering.Leadership and interpersonal skills.Ability to recognize and address relevant issues with minimal supervision.Eligible for membership with the Institute of Engineers Australia.Ability to obtain and maintain an Australian Defence Security Clearance to NV1 level.Must be an Australian Citizen.This role requires a current National Police Clearance and an Australian Defence Security Clearance.
