Senior Infrastructure Engineer
Location: Canberra (NV1 Security Clearance required)
Contract: Initial 12 months with extensions
About the role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join a high-performing government technology team. This position plays a critical role in designing, managing, and maintaining secure internet gateway and large-scale data centre environments that underpin digital service delivery across Australia.
As the subject matter expert, you'll provide specialist technical advice, collaborate with third-party suppliers, and work closely with architecture and shared services teams to ensure the delivery of robust and secure infrastructure platforms.
Key responsibilities
* Design, evaluate and implement infrastructure to meet future demand
* Provide expert technical support for build, test and deployment activities
* Prepare, review and maintain design documentation, implementation plans, test plans and support procedures
* Contribute to operational policy, procedures, and change initiatives
* Participate in change management and communicate the implications of configuration changes
* Provide specialist technical and strategic advice to senior executives
* Mentor and support less experienced engineers
* Research emerging technologies and recommend fit-for-purpose solutions
* Partner with other agencies and providers to build delivery capability
* Manage high availability, disaster recovery, patching, and maintenance of infrastructure systems
Essential criteria
* Minimum 5 years' demonstrated experience in the design, management and maintenance of internet gateway and/or large-scale data centre networking environments
Desirable skills
* Proficiency with F5/Blue Coat Layer 4–7 load balancing and proxy systems
* Strong experience with Cisco Data Centre technologies (Cisco ACI, routers, Nexus switches, routing protocols such as BGP, OSPF, EIGRP)
* Expertise with Palo Alto firewalls and IPS solutions
* Experience in VPN, email, and DNS (Infoblox) solutions
* Integration of hybrid and public cloud services
* Development and maintenance of system architecture/design documentation
* Knowledge of Australian Government security frameworks, including the ASD Information Security Manual and Essential Eight
Additional requirements
* NV1 Security Clearance (or ability to obtain and maintain)
* Ability to provide two professional referees (manager level, within the last 4 years)
