The ALS Hydrographics Team in Maffra, Victoria is seeking ambitious applicants for the position of Trainee Hydrographer / Technical Assistant within the environmental monitoring team.
The successful candidate will receive on-the-job training as well as enrolment and support to complete a Diploma of Water Operations (Hydrography).
As a permanent position, this role is Monday to Friday 8:00AM to 4:30PM.
The Day to Day
Responsibilities include:
Hands on role, requiring teamwork, reliability and initiativeRoutine visitation and maintenance of remote environmental monitoring sites, consisting mainly of stream flow monitoring and meteorological monitoring sitesCollect and verify environmental data using various software packages and scientific instruments in the field (streamflow gauging, Water quality/sampling etc) Assistance in completing other environmental monitoring projects and routine works as requiredAccurate Record keeping including field notes, photographs, and mapsAssisting in the upgrade of old, and installation of new environmental monitoring stations across the Gippsland RegionUse of a wide range of hand tools; work can include manual excavation for extended periods of time

Environmental or trade-based qualification preferred, but not essential, school leavers are welcome to applyStrong work ethic, who is reliable and shows initiativePhysically fit with a desire for working in a hands-on, outdoor environmentExperience in the use of hand, power and pneumatic tools is highly desirableElectronics and mechanical aptitude an advantageLateral thinking and problem-solving skillsSound knowledge of, and adherence to general HSE principles and practicesAbility to swimAbility to perform manual handling tasksGood computer skills/aptitude
