Education Assistant - Special Needs
role at
Department of Education, Western Australia
We are seeking to establish a pool of Special Needs Education Assistants for permanent and fixed-term, full-time and part-time vacancies that may arise during the **** school year. Appointments may be offered at any time for vacancies that commence during this period.
At Spencer Park Education Support Centre (SPESC), our students achieve progress and success against their individualised learning plans. We value evidence-based engagement practices and behaviour-management strategies such as Antecedent-Behaviour-Consequence (ABC). Understanding how to apply appropriate interventions for engagement, challenging behaviours and sensory needs, or a willingness to undertake training, is an advantage. We uphold the belief that all behaviour is communication; every student has the right to have a voice and to be heard. SPESC supports students through Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) such as Pragmatic Organisation Dynamic Display books, communication devices, Auslan and Key Word Sign.
SPESC's vision of "Partnerships for Successful Learning" focuses on expertise in 'Learning', 'Inclusion' and 'Wellbeing'. We are situated alongside Spencer Park Primary School and collaborate closely to provide inclusivity within students' social and learning programmes.
We employ Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) expectations and a specialised social-thinking programme, "We Thinkers", which helps students learn to
Be Safe, Be Friendly and be Your Best
.
SPESC is one of five support centres in Western Australia that offers a specialised learning programme for Kindergarten and Pre-primary students with Global Developmental Delay (GDD) and Autism (ASD). Through the Early Intervention Programme, students work largely one-on-one in an explicit instruction model designed to prepare them for Year 1 in the mainstream school.
The Role
As an Education Assistant – Special Needs at SPESC you will support teachers in delivering planned education programmes, enabling students to reach their full potential across academic, social, emotional and physical domains. You will use a range of technology tools, such as computers and electronic devices, and provide feedback on education programmes and participate in the evaluation of goal attainment.
Candidates should be open-minded, adaptable, and able to work as part of a classroom team or with small groups or individually throughout the day. You will assist teachers in evaluating and improving education programs, including special-education, occupational and/or physiotherapy programmes where needed.
