Position Information

Newcastle Middle School (NMS), located in Waratah, NSW, is a School for Specific Purposes dedicated to support students with significant disabilities in Years 5 to 8. Currently comprising eight classes and 52 students, NMS operates within a unique three-school model, collaborating closely with its Junior and Senior campuses. At Newcastle Middle School, we believe in the transformative power of education and are committed to cultivating a community where every student is valued, empowered, and inspired to achieve their fullest potential. Specific Selection Criteria
* Approval to teach special education and/or experience teaching students with complex learning needs including moderate to severe cognitive disabilities, physical disabilities, mental health and students on the autism spectrum.
* Demonstrated leadership in developing and implementing whole school behaviour management and crisis response strategies. In particular, leading and supporting staff to understand and manage complex and challenging behaviours, including working with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate interventions and supports.
* Demonstrated capacity to lead and mentor staff in the development of exemplary inclusive and equitable practice that support students' successful transitions, ensuring continuity of learning, wellbeing and positive engagement for students with complex learning needs.
* Proven ability to lead whole school initiatives that foster culturally responsive learning environments. This includes driving partnerships with Aboriginal students, families, staff, and community to ensure inclusive support that honours cultural knowledge, identity, and educational outcomes.
General Selection Criteria
* Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice.
* Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs.
* Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams.
* Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents.
* Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning.
* Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy.
Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
