Primary objective
Work towards independent practice at the level of a Rural Generalist with advanced skills in surgery, whilst caring for the patients and
communities of one or more Northern Territory regions. Your contract will incorporate all training required to complete the AST/ ARST
in surgery at Royal Darwin Hospital as well as any other outstanding vocational training requirements. Whilst the contract stipulates an
East Arnhem or Big Rivers ‘Home’ Region your training is not intended to be limited to just the main regional town or even the region.
Context statement
A Rural Generalist Trainee (RGT) is a Medical Officer employed in a hospital or community setting whose employment counts towards
vocational training leading to the award of Fellowship of Royal Australian College of General Practitioners- Rural Generalist (RACGP-RG)
and/ or Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM). A Senior Rural Generalist Trainee is a medical
officer who has completed or almost completed FRACGP-RG or FACRRM and is employed to undertake a further period of employment
to consolidate or gain new knowledge and skills.
Delivery of the full range of rural generalist healthcare from regional hospitals to remote areas involving small plane travel and either
overnight or longer stays is core to the Rural Generalist Trainee role.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Initially complete all surgical AST/ ARST surgery advanced skill training at Royal Darwin Hospital (ordinarily over first 18- 24 months
of contract). Subsequently transition to independent surgery advanced skills practice at Gove and/ or Katherine hospitals whilst
completing any other outstanding training requirements.
2. To your increasing safe capability and under necessary supervision, provide comprehensive clinic and hospital-based care to patients,
their family and community; all accurately documented and communicated in a timely manner.
3. As age and culturally appropriate communicate effectively with patients, their family and other relevant carers.
4. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken to
ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
5. Develop and maintain the knowledge and skills for the position including expertise in both clinical and public health medicine,
through participation in continuous medical education, professional development, peer review, research, teaching, quality
improvement activities and clinical audits as appropriate.
6. Participate in after-hours and/ or remote clinic rosters as determined by the Director of Medical Services or delegate.
7. Balanced with direct clinical responsibilities, complete your specific outstanding vocational training requirements.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current general medical and/or specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. By employment commencement a RACGP-RG or ACRRM fellow (SRGT) or vocational trainee (RGT).
3. Broad postgraduate medical experience including in surgery (as a guide approximately six months in last three years)
4. Demonstrated interpersonal skills that promote effective teamwork, patient safety, and patient centred care.
5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Desirable
1. Previous experience in Aboriginal and/ or Torres Strait Islander health.
2. Previous experience living and working in remote communities or other resource-limited settings.
