Sandfire Resources has entered an exciting partnership with Havilah Resources to advance the Kalkaroo Copper-Gold Project in South Australia. An opportunity exists for an accomplished Principal Engineer – Energy to join our Project team as we undertake the Prefeasibility Study, bringing deep technical authority, strategic energy systems insight, and a proven track record delivering major mining power renewable/hybrid energy developments.
This integral role will provide high-level direction across complex brownfield and greenfield projects, with a strong focus on largescale mining power supply, HV transmission and distribution, renewable and hybrid energy systems, battery energy storage, and remote microgrid integration. Your influence will shape project strategy, engineering governance, and execution outcomes across multiple phases—from concept through commissioning.
Responsibilities (include but are not limited too):
* Provide technical leadership and governance across power system design, planning, modelling, and execution for major mining and energy infrastructure projects.
* Lead feasibility study phases (Scoping, PFS, FS), ensuring robust options analysis, technoeconomic evaluation, risk assessment, and alignment with business objectives.
* Oversee and review engineering deliverables for HV/LV power systems, substations, generation assets, renewable and hybrid systems, BESS, and microgrid control architectures.
* Guide project implementation from early works through construction, energisation, commissioning, and operational readiness, ensuring engineering integrity and system reliability.
* Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering inputs and manage complex interfaces across electrical, mechanical, civil, process, and operational teams.
* Develop and review scopes of work, cost estimates, schedules, technical specifications, and grid connection documentation.
* Engage with senior stakeholders, utilities, regulatory bodies, consultants, and Energy Partners to drive alignment and resolve high level technical issues.
* Mentor and develop engineering capability within the team, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation.
About You
* 15–20 years’ experience in power engineering within the mining, utilities, or heavy industry sectors.
* Demonstrated experience delivering largescale mining power supply, renewable energy, and hybrid system projects at a senior or principal level.
* Strong background in feasibility studies, power system modelling, and major project execution.
* Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or equivalent highly regarded.
* Strong leadership presence, with the ability to influence, guide, and elevate engineering outcomes.
