We are looking for a Scientist to join us in making a difference at our Mycobacterium Reference Laboratory.
What you'll do
* Perform core duties such as specimen reception, sample processing and inoculation and AFB microscopy
* Undertake tasks such as culture, culture interpretation and identification, susceptibility testing and molecular work to a consistently high technical standard.
* Demonstrate a positive team-focussed attitude by working cooperatively and communicating effectively within the team and with clients, both internal and external to the laboratory.
* Work without direct supervision, make decisions and accept responsibility for work performed within their sphere of responsibility
* Demonstrate a professional attitude, working with commitment, accuracy and efficiency and in a safe and timely manner.
* Comply with NATA/ISO accreditation/certification including participation in quality management and quality assurance activities, internal and external quality control programs and assisting with the preparation of procedure manuals
* Assist supervisory staff in the delivery of an effective mycobacterial service.
* Undertake shift work as required.
About you
We are searching for someone who has:
* Demonstrated knowledge appropriate to the position with emphasis on sound ability in techniques relevant to clinical microbiology.
* Ability to follow instructions, and work conscientiously and accurately with minimum local supervision, with the ability to work alone.
* Demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills, effective interpersonal skills, and the ability to work alone and co-operatively in a team environment.
* A demonstrated commitment to the principles of quality management and continuous quality improvement, and an understanding of the basis of laboratory Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs.
* Actively participate in a working environment supporting quality human resource management practices including employment equity, anti-discrimination, occupational health and safety and ethical behaviour.
* A recognised tertiary degree in science (preferably Medical Laboratory Science) majoring in Microbiology or an equivalent qualification.
* Relevant technical experience and competence is required.
