Senior embedded engineer

Aquila

Offer description

Aquila is building the future of energy, and it's made of light.

Apply here: https://aquilaspace.notion.site/Lead-Embedded-Engineer-30bf5d0515ca8098b44dcc9230d93642

As a Senior / Lead Embedded Engineer at Aquila, you'll be at the heart of building the software that delivers energy through light. This isn't firmware for a consumer gadget - it's the control layer of a first-of-its-kind wireless energy networking platform, where reliability and real-time performance aren't nice-to-haves, they're physics requirements.

You'll take technical ownership of our firmware and embedded software stack - from low-level drivers running on microcontrollers through to cloud telemetry - while leading and mentoring a small, talented engineering team as we scale. This is a rare opportunity to define architecture from the ground up, in an environment unconstrained by legacy decisions or cost-cutting compromises. The only limits are the laws of physics.

What You'll Do

You'll lead the technical development of Aquila's embedded software, setting the architectural direction and raising the bar for how we build. Day to day, that means:

* Designing and documenting a cohesive application software architecture spanning a network of hard real-time embedded microcontrollers, high level microprocessors, and their integration with back-end cloud infrastructure.
* Set the standard for how firmware/software is designed and developed within the team
* Writing core middleware that defines our communication standards, state-machine control, error handling, data logging, and telemetry
* Writing low-level high performance firmware for various real-time control systems
* Design and build automated testing infrastructure to drive forward system reliability
* Collaborate with engineers across electronics, mechatronics, mechanical, optical, laser, and photovoltaics fields to accelerate development of complex systems.
* Contribute to requirements setting and strategy discussions, providing well informed insight on behalf of the software team.
* Leading, mentoring and growing a small firmware team - and playing an active role in hiring and team structure as we scale
* Bringing modern best practices and fresh technical thinking into the team

What You'll Bring

We're looking for someone who has built robust, safety-critical firmware before and is ready to lead a team doing it again - in a much more exciting context ; )

* A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
* Proven experience in firmware or embedded software development for real-time microcontrollers
* Strong proficiency in modern C++ within an embedded context (C++11 and beyond);
* Familiarity with a general purpose programming language, e.g. Python, Go, or MATLAB for tooling and testing
* Strong familiarity with common low-level communication interfaces, UART, SPI, I2C, and ideally CAN.
* Strong familiarity with common microcontroller peripherals, e.g. timers, interrupts, ADC's, DAC's, etc.
* A background in safety-critical systems development - automotive, aerospace, medical, or similar sectors would be beneficial
* Experience building CI/CD tooling and testing frameworks within an embedded contextThe instincts of a technical lead: you set standards, unblock your team, and make architecture decisions you're prepared to own
* Experience in control systems engineering or electronics development would be a huge bonus!
* Everyone is an owner. In addition to excellent base compensation, every 'eagle' owns equity in the company, so we all benefit from our hard work and future success.
* Generous paid parental leave. We offer eight weeks of parental leave above the government-allocated amount.
* Relocation budget & support. Support for interstate or overseas team members and their families (including pets!)
* Flexible working hours and location. While we often enjoy shooting lasers around in our fully decked-out laser facilities, if there are days when we can work from anywhere, then we feel free to work from anywhere!
* Generous Personal Leave. At Aquila, we recognise that sometimes you need time off to recuperate, look after your mental health, or deal with an emergency. We provide unlimited (within reason) personal leave to empower you to bring your best self to work every day, and you are always paid for days taken off as personal leave.
* We care about our people: At Aquila, we don't focus on what our people can do for us; we focus on what we can do for our people. As part of our commitment to our people, we provide an annual $1k budget for side projects, health, gizmos and gadgets you want to develop, skills you want to learn, and ways you want to grow outside work.
* Company-wide social events: offsite hiking and/or skiing through beautiful Australian landscapes, annual end-of-year celebrations, and much more!
* Great, decked-out office! An inclusive community and culture in a welcoming office with lasers, cutting-edge hardware, snacks, and actual tech you can go tinker with (within the bounds of safety).

Aquila welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and has around 40% female representation on our team (which for deep tech is better than most!). Join our team and help us build an infinitely scalable energy network that powers a more abundant, limitless, and sustainable future.
