School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability Full-time permanent position Base salary will be in the range $91,658.60 - $98,330.37 17% Superannuation (HEW Level 6) Based at our St Lucia Campus About This Opportunity We’re looking for a hands-on Technical Officer to support teaching and research in plant science and related disciplines. Based at St Lucia, this role plays a key part in delivering practical classes, maintaining field and lab equipment, and ensuring our facilities run smoothly and safely. You'll provide specialist technical support, offer OH&S guidance to staff and students, and help supervise Plant Science facilities. While you'll be part of the Crop, Plant and Soil Sciences technical team, you may also lend your skills to other disciplines as needed. Some travel to Gatton or other remote sites may be required for training and work-related tasks. Key responsibilities will include: Plan, coordinate, and deliver technical support for undergraduate and postgraduate practical classes in plant science. Assist with course material updates, tutor training, and contribute to practical content delivery. Provide high-level technical advice and training to coursework and research students on lab and field techniques, equipment use, and safety procedures. Manage consumable stock, reference materials, and specimens for student use. Assist in planning and coordinating field trips and site visits. Supervise teaching labs and research facilities, maintain safe work procedures, and manage equipment usage, maintenance, calibration, and procurement. Oversee cost recovery and budget management, support asset stocktakes and audits, and liaise with contractors on minor works in the Plant Science area. Ensure compliance with OH&S, OGTR, PC2, and Biosecurity requirements. Train users, manage permits, support audits, and uphold UQ’s safety policies and procedures. Support technical needs across disciplines when seconded and liaise with internal stakeholders and contractors to deliver high-quality lab and field learning environments. Demonstrated broad knowledge and experience in the field of plant science, including plant physiology, plant pathology, or plant molecular biology. Knowledge and skills in relevant laboratory and glasshouse techniques, including sterile technique, plant growth, routine laboratory techniques, and design and execution of laboratory and glasshouse experiments. Thorough familiarity with common laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, pH meters, and autoclaves and the ability to train others. Proven ability to broaden skill set in knowledge and techniques into unfamiliar fields of plant science or related disciplines Skilled, or the ability to acquire and exercise skills, in managing laboratories and field sites for teaching and research, in accordance with internal and external policies, standards and guidelines. Able to support undergraduate and postgraduate students in their learning and to provide technical advice and training appropriate to students’ needs. Experienced and skilled in Microsoft Office applications. Willing and able to operate in a digital environment, including use of Microsoft Teams and shared files. Strong communication and collaboration skills. Able to work harmoniously and productively with a range of different academic staff, technical team colleagues, and other professional support staff. Knowledge of the University’s policies and procedures relating to Occupational Health and Safety, the Risk Assessment database, and the on-line Purchasing system, or the ability to acquire such knowledge. The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, AHPRA registration, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification, blue card check, etc. You must maintain unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply.
