Role Summary


The role of Senior Manager, Public Affairs is a high-profile position within the organization's central point for internal and external communication. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing proactive and reactive media engagement strategies, leading a team of media officers, and establishing collaborative relationships across the University.



Job Responsibilities


The Senior Manager, Public Affairs will oversee the development and implementation of media engagement strategies to showcase the University's world-class research and education to a wide audience. This will include commissioning story ideas, editing, pitching to journalists, managing press conferences and briefings, coordinating responses to media inquiries, and providing in-house media training and support for ANU staff.


Key responsibilities will also include:



* Managing a team of media officers to achieve strategic objectives

* Developing and maintaining effective relationships with academics, researchers, professional staff, and students in Colleges, Schools, and other Divisions

* Establishing and maintaining excellent relationships with journalists

* Coordinating responses to media inquiries and briefings

* Providing expert advice on media engagement and public affairs



The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading and executing proactive and reactive media engagement strategies, managing teams, and thriving in a fast-paced environment. They will also possess an enthusiasm for university research and an insatiable curiosity.



Requirements


To be successful in this role, the candidate must have:



* A strong understanding of the media landscape and its applications in a higher education setting

* Proven experience in leading and executing media engagement strategies

* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

* Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team

* Experience in managing teams and leading projects

* Strong problem-solving and analytical skills

* Knowledge of relevant laws and regulations related to media and public affairs
