The location and Lifestyle:
Mt Carbine has a rich history of tungsten production and is strategically and conveniently located only 75 kms from the beautiful seaside town of Port Douglas in Far North Queensland where the Daintree Forest meets the Great Barrier Reef. The Mt Carbine Tungsten mine is 120km North of Cairns International Airport via sealed highway. Neighbouring the Mt Carbine township on the Mulligan Highway, The Mt Carbine Tungsten Mine is central to Mossman, Port Douglas, Mareeba, Julatten and Mt Molloy. For those with families, there is a choice of private and public schools, as well as universities and technical education facilities in the region.
About the Role:
We are seeking an experienced Shotfirer to join our team. Play a key role in delivering, high-quality blasting operations at a leading Tungsten mine. A shotfirer is responsible for the safe, controlled use of explosives to fragment rock in line with the mine plan, ensuring both production efficiency and strict safety compliance. You will be required to demonstrate the experience below and skills necessary to be successful in the role:
Key Responsibilities
Blast Preparation & Planning
* Interpret blast designs from engineers/geologists
* Calculate correct explosive types, quantities, and timing
* Inspect drilled holes (depth, alignment, cleanliness) before loading
Explosives Handling & Compliance
* Manage storage, transport, and security of explosives (magazines)
* Maintain strict compliance with Queensland explosives and mining legislation
* Complete all documentation and tracking of explosives used
* Charging & Tie-In
* Load blast holes with explosives and detonators
* Ensure correct stemming (backfilling) and charge distribution
* Connect initiation systems (NONEL, electronic, or detonating cord) as per design
Safety & Blast Control
* Establish and enforce exclusion zones
* Clear personnel and equipment from the blast area
* Conduct final safety checks before firing
Firing the Blast
* Execute the blast according to schedule
* Ensure detonation occurs safely and as designed
Post-Blast Activities
* Inspect for misfires or unexploded charges
* Assess blast results (fragmentation, movement, compliance with design)
* Declare area safe for re-entry
Team & Operational Support
* Supervise or mentor blast crew
* Coordinate with drillers, supervisors, and production teams
* Maintain equipment and ensure readiness for next blast
Key Selection Criteria
* Current Shotfirer Licence (QLD) and demonstrated experience in drill and blast operations within an open-cut mining environment
* Proven ability to safely handle, store, transport, and use explosives in accordance with Queensland legislation and site procedures
* Strong knowledge and practical experience in blast hole charging, tie-in systems (NONEL/electronic), and initiation practices
* Ability to interpret blast designs and plans, ensuring accurate implementation to achieve required fragmentation and production outcomes
* Demonstrated commitment to safety leadership, including hazard identification, risk assessment, and enforcement of exclusion zones
* Experience in identifying, managing, and reporting misfires and other blast-related hazards
* Sound understanding of drill and blast optimisation, including fragmentation control, vibration, and fly rock management
* Ability to work collaboratively with mining supervisors, drillers, and production crews to meet operational targets
* Strong communication and reporting skills, including accurate completion of blast records and compliance documentation
* High level of attention to detail, accountability, and decision-making under pressure
* Ability to work in remote environments and adapt to changing operational conditions
* Current Driver's Licence and relevant site competencies (e.g. Standard 11, Working at Heights, Confined Space – desirable)
