Offer description

* Work directly on complex legal issues supporting Cabinet and Ministers
* Apply your expertise across commercial, legislative and policy matters
* Full-time temporary Clerk Grade 9/10 ($129,464- $142,665 per annum) opportunity up to 2 years (with the potential to extend or convert to ongoing) based in Martin Place, with flexible working arrangements supported.

Provide high-impact legal advice on complex government matters within the Office of General Counsel, supporting Cabinet, Ministers and senior leaders.


About the Role

As a Senior Legal Officer, you will provide timely, high‑quality legal advice on complex legislative, policy and commercial matters that support Government decision‑making. The role involves drafting, statutory interpretation and advising on high‑profile issues, including commercial matters and matters progressing through Cabinet and Parliament.

You will join the Legal Branch within the Office of General Counsel - a trusted, high‑performing team supporting the Premier, Ministers and senior leaders on critical legal and policy issues.


Areas of legal focus include:

* A wide range of contracts including agreements for goods and services, ICT, confidentiality deeds, funding agreements, IP licenses, real property leases and licences
* MoUs with other NSW or Commonwealth agencies
* Debt recovery and insolvency


Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

* Providing pragmatic, sound legal advice to departmental staff on a wide variety of contracts and commercial matters.
* Reviewing and drafting legal documents, including contracts, MoUs and delegation instruments.
* Undertaking legal research, statutory interpretation and applying legal reasoning to problem‑solving.
* Contributing to whole‑of‑government policy development, including contributing to advice on matters for consideration by the NSW Cabinet involving commercial matters.
* Formulating, evaluating, and responding to proposals for legislative reform involving commercial matters.
* Contributing to legal projects involving commercial matters aligned with departmental priorities.


We're Looking For

* Qualifications: Admitted, or eligible for admission, as a legal practitioner to the Supreme Court of NSW
* Legal expertise: Experience in contracts and commercial law, with strong generalist legal capability across complex matters
* Communication: Experience providing clear, accurate and concise written and verbal advice within short timeframes
* Delivery under pressure: Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deliver to tight deadlines in a high‑volume environment
* Judgement & integrity: Demonstrated ability to apply sound judgement and navigate politically sensitive environments to develop balanced legal and policy solutions.

Salary

Clerk Grade 9/10. Package includes base salary ($129,464 - $142,665) plus superannuation (12%) and leave loading.
