Primary objective
Provide expert, objective, accurate and timely professional advice to senior management, Project Managers and client
agencies on environmental matters within the construction industry. Conduct environmental investigations and prepare
documentation for legislative approvals for a wide range of building and civil infrastructure projects across the Northern
Territory. Provide high level leadership and management to the Environment Section to ensure outputs are delivered
effectively.

Context statement
The Transport Planning Unit undertakes strategic planning, assessment, approval and delivery of transport infrastructure
priorities, and energy and mining projects. A key focus is evaluation of the natural resources; cultural and logistic road
corridor impacts of initiatives to support integrated industry activity and economic growth. Environment Services also
provides support and advice to the wider Department and other Agencies on matters of environmental and cultural
significance.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide specialist professional environmental advice to Senior Management, Project Managers, regions and client

agencies on environmental matters related to infrastructure projects.
2. Provide high level leadership and resource management of the environment team and manage staffing, financial and

physical resources of the work unit.
3. Lead the development, implementation and maintenance of environmental policy, risk assessment, design guidelines,

technical directives and standards for the Department.
4. Establish an excellent working relationship with clients and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, on all

matters relating to environmental issues throughout the Territory and provide high level advice on related matters that
may be required to ensure that programs are achieved.

5. Carry out all duties in accordance with Departmental OH&S, EEO and environmental guidelines.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Degree in Environmental Planning, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Engineering, Natural Science or

similar.
2. Ability to provide specialist professional environment advice to a range of stakeholders including Senior Management,

Project Managers, regions and client agencies on all phases of design/documentation and delivery of services.
3. Demonstrated contemporary leadership and management skills.
4. High level oral and written communication skills including the ability to effectively consult and collaborate and build

strong professional working relationships with colleagues, external clients, the community and industry representatives.
5. Specialist professional knowledge of environmental, planning and sacred sites legislation and its application to the

construction industry including both civil and built infrastructure.
6. Extensive experience and knowledge of practical environmental management.
7. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.

Desirable
1. Sound knowledge of business management and business drivers in a commercial environment.
