Allygroup is seeking an experienced Admin Lawyer for a contract opportunity to support a high-profile Australian Government client. This position is offered as an initial three‐month contract with the possibility of a further three‐month extension.
This role is open to multiple locations including Canberra (ACT), Brisbane (QLD), Melbourne (VIC), Sydney (NSW).
What We're Looking For:
* Experience in administrative law, including advising on decision‐making obligations, procedural fairness, and the application of administrative law principles to complex or novel issues.
* Strong capability in statutory interpretation, with the ability to analyse and apply legislative frameworks, assess legislative intent, and provide clear, practical advice on how legislation applies in operational contexts.
* Experience advising on legislative compliance and remediation, including identifying compliance risks, recommending corrective actions, and supporting the development or implementation of remediation strategies.
* Prior experience working with legislation administered by the agency (or a closely related legislative framework) is highly desirable, as it would enable faster onboarding and more effective delivery of legal advice.
Duties and Responsibilities
May include some or all of the following:
* Provide high‐level specialist legal and strategic advice to stakeholders, including the Minister and the agency's Executive.
* Lead and manage staff, overseeing performance, attendance, and initiatives that support health and wellbeing.
* Build staff capability through coaching, mentoring and effective succession planning.
* Represent the General Counsel and provide subject‐matter expertise to both the General Counsel and Chief Counsel.
* Set the strategic direction for the work area, including developing business plans, establishing priorities, and monitoring workflow and performance.
* Offer expert advice and guidance to staff undertaking legal work, manage escalated matters, and review and approve legal outputs before they are provided to stakeholders.
* Lead and manage a caseload of legal matters, including high‐profile and contentious cases.
* Provide high‐level specialist legal, strategic and practical input into the development of agency policies, processes and procedures.
* Oversee, review and provide advice on written materials, including briefs for external legal providers, and issue instructions throughout legal proceedings.
* Prepare complex and/or sensitive legal submissions, court documents and formal correspondence.
* Identify, assess, manage and report on legal risks across the agency, escalating issues to the Executive where required.
* Develop and manage key strategic relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
* Represent and negotiate on behalf of the agency in cross‐agency, inter‐jurisdictional and other forums to advance the agency's interests.
* Lead, manage and deliver branch‐ and division‐level projects.
* Analyse, review, evaluate and monitor legal information to support major projects and new business initiatives.
* Oversee quality assurance activities and promote sound, high‐quality decision‐making.
* Develop and implement strategies, operational policies, procedures and organisational change initiatives.
* Drive innovation, lead and manage change, and actively contribute to implementing the agency's strategic direction.
* Represent the agency before courts and tribunals in matters involving significant and complex issues.
* Exercise delegations in accordance with relevant legislation, policies and guidelines.
