About the opportunity
The Discipline of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney is seeking applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position under the supervision of Dr Joanne Gray, Professor Marcus Carter, and Dr Benjamin Egliston.
The successful applicant will contribute to a research project developing governance frameworks for immersive technologies-such as virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR)-with a focus on proactively preventing harms such as harassment, privacy violations, exploitation and discrimination in immersive environments. As part of this work, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will examine competing industry visions for immersive technologies and assess their social and regulatory implications, with particular attention to the experiences of marginalised communities.
The role also involves engaging with industry and policy stakeholders to support the development of inclusive, accountable, and forward-looking regulatory approaches.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
* undertake original research on VR/AR harms and VR/AR policy implications, including fieldwork design, data collection, qualitative coding and critical analysis
* co-author high-quality publications (journal articles, conference papers, an edited book and policy reports) and act as a co-editor for the project's collected volume on immersive-tech harms and governance
* coordinate participant recruitment for digital-ethnography and speculative-design studies, ensuring ethical, inclusive and culturally sensitive engagement with marginalised communities
* organise and facilitate stakeholder events-including a multi-sector Stakeholder Summit in Australia, policy co-design workshops in Australia and Singapore, and public-facing seminars-and contribute to issues-paper drafting
* translate research findings into clear briefings for policymakers, industry partners and the wider public.
* maintain project records (interview transcripts, datasets, ethics documentation, budget trackers) and contribute to overall project management and reporting
* present research at domestic and international conferences and represent the project in media and public-engagement activities
* mentor honours and HDR students attached to the project and collaborate respectfully with colleagues across disciplines
* uphold equity, diversity and inclusion principles in all aspects of research and engagement.
About you
* a PhD (or near completion) in a relevant field relating to media or communications, or a field relating to this research project
* a track record in policy and design research
* evidence of holding an emerging research profile and the ability to conduct independent research and assume responsibility for the development and completion of research papers in a timely manner
* experience in applying qualitative research
* previous attendance at international conferences and willingness to travel as required
* excellent presentation skills and experience presenting complex information to different audiences, including industry, government, civil society organisations, and through various media
* demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a team, capacity to succeed in a fast-paced research-intensive environment, and sound written, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills suitable to collaborating in an academic context
