About the Respiratory Close Observation Unit
The RCOU specialises in providing intensive care for patients with severe respiratory conditions. We are staffed by leading expert clinicians and equipped with advanced technology. The unit offers close monitoring and rapid intervention to improve patient outcomes and manages conditions such as COPD exacerbations, asthma attacks, and pneumonia, often preventing the need for full intensive care admission. It also supports ongoing education and research to advance respiratory medicine.
- We provide intensive monitoring and treatment for acute respiratory illnesses.
- We utilise advanced respiratory support techniques such as non-invasive ventilation.
- Our unit is enabled with rapid response, reducing complications and hospital stays.
- We manage a broad range of critical lung conditions effectively.
- We also act as a centre for respiratory education, training, and research.
What you'll be doing
In this role you’ll be leading a dynamic team, ensuring secure, high-quality patient care, and driving professional nursing standards across your unit.
Your daily responsibilities consist of:
- Coordinating patient care and staff operations.
- Leading with integrity and professionalism.
- Managing team performance and development.
- Advocating for best-practice nursing standards.
- Innovating to improve patient outcomes.
Essential Criteria
- Registration: Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) (NSW Registered Nurse – Division 1)
Selection Criteria
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in management and/or speciality, or working towards attainment in same, or extensive clinical experience in the field that demonstrates ability to perform the role.
- Recent relevant clinical experience deemed appropriate by WSLHD.
- Demonstrated recent experience and understanding of financial management and accountabilities in relation to stock and effective budget utilisation.
- Demonstrated application of evidence-based practice and critical thinking to patient care.
- Demonstrated ability to lead change that results in sustained improvements in patient care, throughput and resource utilisation.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills.
