Full-Time Fire Service Mechanical Tradesperson

Closing Date: Monday 08th September 2025 at 4pm

Norfolk Island Regional Council is seeking expressions of interest from trade-qualified individuals within the community for the role of Fire Service Mechanical Tradesperson. This full-time position will work under the supervision of the Airport Mechanical Team and play a key role in supporting the operational readiness of the Fire Service fleet. The successful candidate will be provided with certification to work on Rosenbauer Fire Tenders and will be responsible for ensuring all mobile equipment used by the Fire Service is maintained in accordance with MOS 139H requirements.

The Norfolk Island International Airport is the island's primary gateway for residents, visitors, and critical services. It is one of the most vital pieces of infrastructure on the island, supporting regular commercial flights from Sydney and Brisbane, as well as medical evacuations and general aviation. The airport spans 120 hectares, with 95 hectares dedicated to aviation operations, including two runways and a terminal precinct. It is regulated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and maintains full compliance with aviation safety and security legislation.

Position Details

Location: Norfolk Island

Classification: Level 5.1

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (must be available to work outside normal hours)

Benefits: 12% superannuation + entitlements in accordance with NIRC's Certified Enterprise Agreement 2023

Key Responsibilities

* Conducting scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on fire tenders and associated equipment.
* Engaging with manufacturers to procure parts and specialist services as required.
* Managing inventory control of parts and spares.
* Coordinating third-party vendor support when necessary.
* Maintaining accurate service records and compliance documentation.
* Supporting the development of maintenance schedules and procedures.
* Assisting airport mechanics with maintenance and repairs on other airport vehicles and equipment as required.

Requirements:

* Trade qualification in mechanical or automotive engineering.
* Strong organisational and communication skills.
* Willingness to undertake certification for Rosenbauer Fire Tenders.
* Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

The newly established Norfolk Island Regional Council commenced on 1 July 2016. The Norfolk Island Regional Council is unique in that it provides a broad range of local government services to the community of Norfolk Island. The day-to-day management of Council is the responsibility of the General Manager who currently reports to Council's Lead Administrator. The General Manager is supported by four portfolio managers.
