Overview
Spiral Blue is building next-generation space-based LiDAR and edge computing systems to enable decision-grade measurement of the Earth. Our technology supports climate security, national security, and critical geospatial intelligence applications, from forest carbon measurement to autonomous navigation and defence use cases. We have delivered multiple space missions, are actively testing LiDAR systems, and are now scaling toward our first operational Space-to-Earth capability.
We are seeking a senior space systems engineer or engineering manager to lead development of our Space-to-Earth LiDAR systems. This is a high-impact, high-ownership role at the core of the company's roadmap. You will shape system architecture, lead execution, and work directly with leadership, partners, and government stakeholders.
An immediate priority for this role will be contributing to a major national security proposal in the coming weeks, defining system architecture and execution approach.
Responsibilities
* Lead end-to-end system architecture for space-based LiDAR payloads and missions.
* Drive integration across optics, electronics, software, and spacecraft systems.
* Define key technical trade-offs across performance, power, thermal, and cost.
* Work closely with partners across defence, civil space, and research ecosystems.
* Translate mission requirements into deployable systems and support technical engagements and proposal development.
* Contribute to a major national security proposal with architecture and execution approach.
* For a senior engineer, exercise deep ownership of system design and hands-on technical leadership across payload and mission engineering.
* For an engineering manager, build and lead the Space-to-Earth engineering team, own delivery and execution planning, and interface with partners and customers at a senior level.
Qualifications
* 5–10+ years of experience in space systems, remote sensing, or complex hardware systems.
* Strong background in systems engineering and experience across multiple disciplines such as optics, avionics, and software.
* Comfort operating in a fast-moving, high-ownership startup environment and ability to communicate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Experience with LiDAR, Earth observation, or geospatial systems is highly valued.
* Experience in defence or national security programs, familiarity with Australian or allied space and defence ecosystems, and a track record of delivering hardware systems from concept to deployment.
* This role is based in Sydney; candidates must be able to work in Australia and contribute to defence-related programs.
If you're interested in building cutting-edge space systems with real-world impact, we'd love to hear from you.
