PhD Scholarship in Synthetic Biology – Engineer the Future with Vibrio natriegens
Join the Frontier of Synthetic Biology at UWA
Are you passionate about genetic engineering and microbial biotechnology? The Fritz Lab (https://www.fritz-lab.org/) at The University of Western Australia (UWA) is offering a fully funded PhD position to pioneering researchers eager to explore the potential of Vibrio natriegens, the fastest-growing bacterium on Earth.
Why V. natriegens? With its rapid doubling time and robust metabolism, V. natriegens stands as a compelling alternative to E. coli for synthetic biology applications. This project aims to develop advanced genetic tools and engineered strains to harness this organism's capabilities for DNA assembly, protein expression, and metabolic production.
What You'll Do:
1. Design modular genetic toolkits using high-throughput workflows.
2. Characterize promoters and gene circuits in V. natriegens.
3. Employ CRISPR-based methods for genome engineering.
4. Collaborate with international experts and present at leading conferences.
Qualifications:
* First-Class Honours or Master's degree in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or related field.
* Experience with molecular cloning and bacterial genetics.
* A strong interest in synthetic biology and microbial engineering.
* Fully funded for 3 years, including a competitive stipend of AU$37,000 p.a., tuition fees, and a budget for research expenses and travel.
Our commitment to inclusion and diversity:
UWA, and the Fritz Lab in particular, is dedicated to promoting a diverse and inclusive academic environment, believing that diversity enhances our capacity for discovery and innovation. We strongly encourage applications from all backgrounds, especially those from underrepresented groups in science and academia.
Start Date: As soon as possible, but no later than September 2025.
