The Salvation Army (Salvos) is one of the largest providers of homelessness services across the country. Our philosophy is that every person should be afforded dignity and respect and that no one should be without a safe, affordable, and secure home. We provide services and supports to adults, and families with accompanying children in the form of accommodation, case management, assertive outreach, financial assistance, community connection and referral services.

The Burnie Safe Space is a short-term accommodation centre in Tasmania for anyone experiencing homelessness on the state's north-west coast. The Safe Space Program provides safe shelter at night with emotional well being and physical support to those who use the program.


About the role

We are seeking a values-driven and proactive Support Worker to provide support to participants of The Safe Space under the direction of case managers and team leader to assist in achieving set outcomes.

Reporting to the Senior Case Manager, this is a casual position based in Burnie, Tasmania. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the SCHADS Level 3.


You will successfully

* Ensure participants feel safe/wanted/comfortable while ensuring they understand the house rules to be able to use the shelter for the night.

* Assess each participant to ensure it is safe to provide shelter for the night; reviewing their safety and the safety of others if they are under the influence of drugs/alcohol.

* Provide participants with information about other support services they can access to assist them move into transitional housing/support.

* Support team members (staff/volunteers/ program team leader) so that a coordinated and collaborative approach is adopted from the outset.

* Ensure highest levels of information exchange to support the best outcomes for participants and staff safety.

* Work collaboratively and professionally with other services.


You will have

* Relevant vocational qualifications or equivalent experience to Certificate III in Community Services.

* Experience in social work, community welfare, mental illness, drug & alcohol dependency, nursing or other relevant experience.

* A Tasmania Working with Vulnerable People Registration.

* A valid Tasmanian Driver Licence.

* First Aid & CPR (or willing to obtain)

* The ability to work with vulnerable individuals and people under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

* An understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of The Salvation Army.
