APS 4 - $77,728 - $84,619 Australian Antarctic Hobart - TAS, Kingston - TAS The Cargo Planning Officer role forms an integral element of the AAD’s Supply Chain Operations, working to forecast and facilitate cargo in support of the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP). The position engages regularly with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders in the lead-up to and throughout the operational season. Who we are The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to: Maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it. Protect the Antarctic environment. Understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system. Undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance. The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. The Operations and Logistics Branch oversees our operations in Antarctica – supporting people in our year-round research stations and remote field bases. The branch oversees air and sea transport (and the contracts to manage Australia’s icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina and Aviation capabilities) to transport expeditioners south and enable them to travel around Antarctica. We have staff with diverse skills, located primarily in Tasmania, in Antarctica and on Macquarie Island. The Supply Chain Operations Section is a key element of the branch’s three logistics arms (the others being aviation and shipping) and carries responsibility for the effective planning, coordination, management and delivery of a range of cargo and supply chain services in support of seasonal operations within the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and the Southern Ocean. The Job Key duties will include, but are not limited to: Engaging with internal and external stakeholders to contribute to the development, review and maintenance of seasonal cargo forecasts against evolving needs and within time constraints. Utilising productive working relationships within the Supply Chain Operations Section, maintaining succinct cargo planning documentation and clear seasonal communications. Working collaboratively with the Kingston warehouse and Cargo Biosecurity Centre teams to coordinate consignments against finalised cargo plans for each transport. Providing accurate guidance on sensitive cargo (i.e. samples, medical or cold chain items) against forecast capacities and in accordance with procedures. Assisting Station Supply Officers to develop Return to Australia (RTA) cargo forecasts and with essential preparations for resupply planning. Participating in the annual review of the AAD’s cargo-related Standard Operating Procedures and biosecurity management practices. Assisting with the preparation and delivery of supply chain management training for station supply and other AAD personnel. Actively contributing to the safe, positive working environments at all AAD cargo handling and warehousing facilities within the team. Advising on risks related to the provision of core Supply Chain Operations services, opportunities for improvements and asset developments potentially impacting supply chain management. What we are looking for Knowledge and Experience Demonstrated experience and proficiency in cargo or resource management and planning, including preparing forecasts and program requirements within known constraints and with a high degree of attention to detail. Experience in adopting innovative practices through the development and delivery of operational products and services. Strong experience in a professional supply chain team, including participating in an effective team-based approach and contributing to a harmonious work environment. Familiarity working with data within cargo tracking/management systems and inventory monitoring. An awareness of the requirements for the preparation of dangerous goods for transport by air and/or sea in compliance with relevant Australian and International standards (e.g. the IMDG/IATA codes). Please note that previous experience working in a supply chain support role in Antarctica or a comparable cold climate environment is desirable but not essential. Skills and Capabilities A proven ability to communicate confidently and clearly, and to maintain productive working relationships with a wide range of key stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to think strategically to identify problems, to critically evaluate options, including identifying and assessing risks. Knowledge of contemporary cargo handling or warehouse systems. A proven capability to support, perform and contribute in small teams. Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Word, Excel). Please note that the successful applicant may be required to travel to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions therefore they may be required to meet specific medical, adaptability and personal qualities requirements appropriate to working in those environments. In order to undertake travel to the Antarctic & sub-Antarctic regions they will need to: Demonstrate the range of personal qualities and interpersonal skills necessary to perform as a successful team member within isolated Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environments. Demonstrate an ability to effectively adapt and respond to the demands of living and working in an isolated and confined environment as determined by a psychological (adaptability) assessment. Be certified as fit for Antarctic service by the AAD’s Polar Medicine Unit. Desirable qualifications A tertiary qualification from an Australian tertiary institution within a relevant field (i.e. supply chain or project management) or demonstrated equivalent experience. Eligibility Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen.
