The General Paediatric Advanced Training program offers accredited positions in Hobart, as well as rural accredited locations in Launceston and Burnie.

General Paediatrics

General Paediatrics Advanced Training Registrar Stream

General Paediatric AT 'Stream': A successful applicant to the General Paediatric AT 'Stream' would be granted a 3-year position, fulfilling all their general paediatric Advanced Trainee requirements.

The training program may be structured something like:

Year 1:
Aim: This rotation fulfills the rural and perinatal training requirement.
Includes: 6 months in General Paediatrics at RHH, and 6 months in General Paediatrics in a regional hospital (Launceston General Hospital or Northwest Regional Hospital, Burnie).

Year 2:
Aim: This rotation will fulfill developmental/psychosocial and acute-care training requirements.
Includes: 6 months in a Community/Developmental Paediatric post (Community Paediatrics, Paediatric Rehabilitation), and 6 months in Neonatal and Paediatric Intensive Care and Newborn and Paediatric Emergency Transport.

Year 3:
Aim: This year is flexible depending on the individual's interests and experience, availability of positions and trainees' level of experience for the General Paediatric Senior Registrar post.
May Include: 6 months General Paediatrics at RHH, 3 months Outpatients, and 3 months in General Paediatrics in a regional hospital (Launceston General Hospital or Northwest Regional Hospital, Burnie).

General Paediatrics Advanced Trainee Registrar

12 month advanced training positions are available with combinations of any of the mentioned rotations including 3, 6 and 12 month rotations to rural sites in Launceston and Burnie.

General Paediatrics Advanced Trainee Senior Registrar - RHH

This position at the RHH is designed for an Advanced Trainee at the end of their training to support both clinical and leadership skill development and transition to consultancy. The General Paediatric Senior Registrar is a vital team member who assists in care of the acute inpatients and outpatient, co-ordinates the junior doctor rostering and education schedule with oversight of staff specialists and holds a professional portfolio within the department including coordination of the RACP Clinical Exam.

There is opportunity to pursue interests in areas such as research, medical education, policy and evidence-based medicine, as well as participate in the first on call roster for the general paediatric ward. The General Paediatric Senior Registrar is highly valued team member, and benefits from close working relationships with the Staff Specialist team.

Paediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Advanced Trainee

This is a unique position at RHH working with a statewide multi-disciplinary Paediatric Rehabilitation team to support children and young people with functional impairments (congenital or required) referred to outpatient Paediatric Rehabilitation clinics (General Rehabilitation, Spinal, Brain Injury, Neuromuscular, Combined Orthopaedic-Rehabilitation Clinic, Transition Clinic), as well as the inpatients accessing rehabilitation care. The position provides excellent training in neurodevelopmental surveillance and rehabilitation of infants, children and young people

The position is open to Advanced Trainees from General Paediatrics, Community Child Health, Neonatal and Perinatal Medicine, or Adult Rehabilitation Medicine. Please note this position is currently accredited for Advanced Training in Paediatric Rehabilitation Medicine.

There is requirement to participate in the after-hours roster and sick leave on call as a registrar for the acute paediatric service.

Adolescent Medicine Advanced Trainee

This position provides experience in a dedicated inpatient and outpatient Adolescent Medicine department. The position is accredited for Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine (AYAM) Core A training, as well as General Paediatrics non-core training. The position includes inpatient care on the Adolescent Medicine ward as well as outpatient experience in adolescent medicine, gender care and eating disorders. There is also the opportunity to work in service development and delivery.

There is requirement to participate in the after-hours roster and sick leave on call as a registrar for the acute paediatric service.

Community Child Health Advanced Trainee

These positions with the Tasmanian Community Paediatric Service (TCPS) are accredited for Community Child Health (CCH) Training including developmental behaviour paediatrics, community-based multidisciplinary paediatrics, child protection training (alternative), social paediatrics and child population health activities. Completion of CCH training exclusively in Tasmania is therefore possible. A rotation with the TCPS is also accredited for developmental/ psychosocial training for general paediatrics.

The role is providing outpatient community paediatric care, with a specific focus on improving the wellbeing of Tasmanian children experiencing social vulnerabilities. Clinical experiences include providing neurodevelopmental assessments, supporting children and young people living in Out of Home Care, working with Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, and collaborating with community service providers. Clinics are located in surrounding areas of Hobart, with opportunity to travel to the North and Northwest of the state for day clinics on a quarterly basis. This is opportunity to participate in the oncall Paediatric Sexual Assault Care roster for trainees interested. There is also opportunity to participate in Public Health research and policy advocacy from within this team. This is an exciting time to work within the TCPS with recent funding supporting the expansion of the service to a multi-disciplinary team of paediatricians and allied health professionals.

Neonatal and Paediatric ICU Senior Registrar

The RHH Neonatal Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (NPICU) provide medical care for neonates, infants and children, including the care of neonates with surgical conditions. As well as working in the NPICU, this role includes participation in the Neonatal and Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (NPETS), the Early Development Clinic, the High-Risk Antenatal Clinic (Foetal Medicine), education, research and quality improvement initiatives.

These positions incorporate clinical training with senior responsibilities, including the supervision of junior medical staff. The position involves a roster that includes daytime supervision of the unit, participation in an after-hours registrar roster, and the opportunity to be first on-call (i.e., acting consultant with back-up) when sufficiently experienced. There is also opportunity to build a professional portfolio through contributions to service development, quality improvement and education.

These positions are accredited for a maximum total of 18 months of advanced training in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine (maximum of 12 months core training in a perinatal centre). Each 12-month period is equivalent to 3 months of accredited surgical training. Senior Advanced Trainees will also participate in the NPETS roster with transport experience also meeting advanced training requirements. The position is also accredited for the acute paediatric requirements of advanced training in General Paediatrics.

There is requirement to participate in the after-hours roster and sick leave on call for the NPICU.

Transport NPICU Advanced Trainee

This position involves training and participation in the Newborn Emergency Transport Service (NETS), as a part of their participation in the NPICU registrar roster. The role incorporates participation in NETS teaching, service development, audit and quality improvement activities. Registrars in the transport role are closely supported by NPICU/NETS consultant staff and the NETS Nursing team.

These positions are accredited for a maximum total of 18 months of advanced training in Neonatal Perinatal Medicine (maximum of 12 months core training in a perinatal centre). Each 12-month period is equivalent to 3 months of accredited surgical training.

There is requirement to participate in the after-hours roster and sick leave on call for the NPICU.

Note – Interested Career Medical Officers are invited to express interest to the unit director.

Salary

$134,930 - $189,005 per annum

Medical Practitioner Level 5 (Registrar) to Level 11 (Senior Registrar)

Period of Employment

Fixed term, full time day work working 76 hours per fortnight (+10 hours protected training time) commencing from 1 February 2026 until 7 February 2028.
