Domestic Animal Services (DAS) provides animal control services to the Canberra community. This includes collection of stray and roaming dogs, community education about responsible pet ownership and management of the dog shelter.
As a part-time Veterinary Officer based at our Symonston facility, you will play a key role in maintaining the health and welfare of dogs in our care, and occasionally cats. Your responsibilities include conducting health assessments, vaccinations, de-sexing, and basic treatments, as well as managing the welfare needs of dangerous or aggressive dogs.
This is a senior leadership position within the City and Environment Directorate (CED). We are looking for someone with excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, who demonstrates initiative, confidence in decision making and can manage competing priorities. You will help build and maintain a culture focused on safety and animal welfare, while working closely with foster and rescue groups to achieve the best outcomes for animals and the community.
Key Responsibilities:
* Deliver veterinary services for dogs in care.
* Administer immunisation programs.
* Support the ACT Animal Welfare Authority to achieve their objectives.
* Undertake premises inspections related to licensing and permit applications and complete written reports on findings.
* Euthanasia of dogs and cats on public safety and/or animal welfare grounds in accordance with the Domestic Animals Act 2000 and/or Animal Welfare Act 1992.
* Advise on, maintain, and assist with animal management procedures.
* Provide veterinary advice and services to key government stakeholders where needed.

Eligibility/Other Requirements:
* A minimum of five years' experience working within a veterinary practice will be highly regarded.
* The position occupant is required to hold tertiary qualifications in veterinary medicine and registration with the ACT Veterinary Surgeons Board.
* Be willing to be, and remain, vaccinated against vaccine-preventable diseases during their employment.
* Due to the regular and ongoing exposure to traumatic material, including cases of animal cruelty, neglect, and euthanasia, participation in monthly counselling sessions through the Employee Assistance Program is a mandatory requirement of this role.
* This position requires a National Police Check prior to commencement.
* This position requires a Driver Licence (Class C) or equivalent.
* This position requires a pre-employment medical assessment which includes audiometric testing and a moderate-level functional assessment.

Notes: There are two part-time positions available immediately at 18:00 hours per week with flexible scheduling to support your work-life balance, the full-time salary noted above will be paid pro-rata. A Merit Pool will be established from this selection process and will be used to fill vacancies over the next 12 months.
