About the Role

School psychologists are an essential part of the Department's school counselling service and work in primary and high schools. They provide counselling and psychological assessment of students, to complement and enhance the work of teachers to strengthen student learning and wellbeing outcomes, and help families understand and manage their children's learning and mental health needs.

This is a collegiate role offering opportunities for professional development and impact on the lives of children and young people.

The successful candidate will be based at Marayong Public School and will have opportunities to work across the lifespan with both primary and high school aged students. Working in a NSW public school enables engagement with a diverse range of students and communities.

School psychologists receive individual supervision with the Senior Psychologist Education and participate in group and peer supervision as part of the school counselling team. You will collaborate with school communities, colleagues and outside agencies, expanding the full range of your skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.

CPD opportunities are available and the NSW Department of Education supports you to maintain registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. Marayong Public School is situated in Western Sydney with a student population of approximately 621 students, including seven support classes and a preschool. Demographics include 67% of students from non-English-speaking backgrounds and 45 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The school reflects diversity of socioeconomic circumstances.

Key Accountabilities

* Provides counselling and psychological services to students, individually and in groups, including short-term therapeutic interventions under supervision
* Engages with and implements the Professional Practice Framework for the NSW School Counselling Service
* Collaborates with the principal, school executive, staff and student support services to improve learning and wellbeing outcomes and implement departmental priorities
* Contributes to social, emotional, and academic development of students and supports schools with complex behavioural needs
* Administers cognitive, social, emotional and behavioural assessments, reports results, and collaborates to improve learning, wellbeing and mental health outcomes
* Works with learning and support teams, parents and carers, and other agencies to develop school-based support for students
* Responds as part of a team to assist schools experiencing serious incidents
* Refers students and families to other agencies to support health and wellbeing outcomes

Essential Requirements

* Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal Education Policy, Partnership Agreement with the NSW AECG Inc., and the Diversity and Inclusion Strategy
* General or Provisional Psychology Registration with the Psychology Board of Australia
* Valid Working with Children Check clearance – WWCC must be NSW
* Current and valid driver's licence and ability and willingness to travel between work sites
* Australian citizenship or permanent residency

Total Remuneration Package

Package valued up to $182,461 + incentives (where applicable). Base salary ranges from $101,122 - $160,983; leave loading and superannuation contributions apply. Note there is no automatic progression to the $160,983 SPAC salary level. Access to SPAC is available after progressing through salary steps and successful application for Advanced Certification level under the NSW School Counselling Service Professional Practice Framework.
