Overview
Gibson Benness Industries GBI Holdings Pty Ltd is seeking an experienced and trade-qualified Wood Machinist to join our team. The role is responsible for the precision machining and processing of timber, engineered wood products, and laminated materials used in the production of custom benchtops, cabinetry components, doors, panels, flat-pack carcasses, and specialty architectural products. The position requires technical expertise in operating production woodworking machinery, strong attention to detail, and the ability to meet production targets while maintaining high-quality standards.
Responsibilities
* Set up, adjust, and operate woodworking machines, including CNC routers, panel saws, edge banders, postformers, and automated press machinery for laminates and veneers.
* Configure CNC machines for precision cutting, drilling, grooving, and shaping operations based on technical drawings, adjusting feed rates, cutting speeds, blade angles, and depth settings.
* Process timber, engineered wood products, and laminates to manufacture custom benchtops, cut and edge doors, panels, flat-pack components, and specialty items such as slat wall and V-groove panelling.
* Inspect raw materials for defects, measure machined components using tape measures, squares, calipers, and digital devices, and ensure finished products meet specifications.
* Perform routine machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, minor adjustments, changing and sharpening cutting tools, and monitoring machinery performance.
* Read and interpret technical drawings, cutting lists, and work orders to complete jobs according to customer specifications, documenting progress and issues.
* Load and unload materials safely, manage inventory selection, stack and store finished products, and handle offcuts and waste responsibly.
* Follow workplace health and safety procedures, use PPE, maintain a clean and organised workspace, and ensure compliance with safe operating standards for all machinery.
* Responsibilities: Achieve production targets while maintaining high-quality standards, efficient use of materials, and minimal waste.
* Ensure all machined products meet dimensional tolerances, identify quality issues, and maintain high standards of workmanship.
* Operate machinery safely, use PPE correctly, maintain a safe working environment, and report hazards, near misses, or incidents immediately.
* Care for machinery to prevent damage, perform routine maintenance, and report equipment issues promptly.
* Collaborate with production team members, communicate effectively with supervisors and quality control personnel, assist in training new staff, and contribute positively to workplace culture.
Qualifications
* AQF Certificate III in Cabinet Making, Wood Machining, or related trade qualification; or
* At least three (3) years of relevant work experience may substitute for the formal qualification.
* Experience operating production woodworking machinery, including panel saws, edge banders, CNC routers, postformers, and other related equipment
* Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, cutting lists, and specifications
* Knowledge of timber products, engineered wood materials, and laminates, including their machining properties
* Proficiency in setting up, adjusting, and maintaining woodworking machinery
* Strong understanding of quality standards and dimensional tolerances
* Knowledge of OH&S practices in a manufacturing environment
* Physical capability to handle sheet materials and finished products safely
* Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
* Must have at least 1 year of relevant work experience
* Operating woodworking machinery to cut, shape, and finish timber and engineered wood products
