AEMO's Forecasting division is responsible for providing medium and long-term forecasts of Australia's energy supply and demand. The team delivers critical data underpinning major reports, including AEMO's Electricity Statement of Opportunities, Gas Statement of Opportunities, and the Integrated System Plan.
The Team Provides
* Regional, sub regional and connection point electricity demand forecasts for the National Electricity Market and the Wholesale Energy Market.
* Forecasts of the future uptake and usage of demand side participation and distributed energy resources, including electric vehicles.
* Forecasts of uptake and usage of distributed energy resources, including rooftop solar and batteries.
* Procurement and coordination of key consultancy deliverables and presentation of these materials to key stakeholders
* Bespoke analysis to support decision making both internal and external to AEMO interpret a large amount of information to understand industry sectors in transition, technological and behavioural change, and periods of potentially disruptive transformation.
This position can be worked out of any of our office locations, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
About The Role
As a Senior Data Scientist/Data Analyst in Demand Forecasting working in a team of seven, you’ll deliver medium to long-term (1–30 year) forecasts of electricity, and distributed energy resources. Using machine learning (ML), predictive models, time series, deep neural networks, and engineering methods, you’ll produce forecasts at both regional and local levels.
You’ll develop key forecasting models, interpret data to provide strategic insights, apply technical and regulatory expertise, and contribute high-quality reports. You’ll also enhance AEMO’s forecasting of trends like electrification, demand flexibility, data centre growth (Artificial Intelligence - AI/Large Language Model - LLMs), and evolving consumer patterns.
What You Will Be Doing
* Apply advanced modelling to forecast electricity demand; design, test & refine models
* Clearly communicate methods & results to internal teams & external stakeholders
* Collaborate across Forecasting teams on demand, multi-sector & reliability modelling
* Coordinate data sharing within AEMO & with partners on electrification & multi-sector impacts
* Represent AEMO in reports, working groups & stakeholder forums
* Support a safe workplace through active participation in H&S activities
* Comply with all financial, regulatory & HR delegations.
What You Will Bring To The Role
Education
* Advanced Degree: Typically, a master's or Ph.D. in computer science, data science, machine learning, electrical engineering, or a related field.
* Relevant certifications in machine learning, deep learning, or data science can be valuable (e.g., DataBricks Certified Machine Learning in Production).
Experience, Knowledge, And Capabilities
* Experience in forecasting, optimization, and time series analysis within the energy sector is desirable.
* Proficient in programming languages such as Python, R, SQL, PowerBI.
* Familiarity with cloud technologies including Azure and DataBricks.
* Well-developed interpersonal, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
* Understanding of the role and functions of AEMO, energy consumers and energy sector developments is desirable.
* Understanding of challenges faced by AEMO with a rapidly transforming power system, especially in long-term forecasting, multi-sectorial impacts, demand analysis, and modelling approaches is desirable.
