Overall Purpose of the Job
The Health and Safety Business Partner provides expert support and guidance to workers and business unit leaders on WHS matters, fostering strong safety leadership across the organisation. The role promotes proactive risk management by embedding and monitoring systems that address critical risks and drive continuous improvement. They work with leaders to facilitate post‑incident learning investigations, uncover root causes, and support a just culture of accountability. Through WHSMS reporting, analysis and auditing activities they deliver insights that enhance safety performance. Collaborating across business units including contractor safety, they ensure WHS systems are effectively implemented, monitored, and refined to protect people and build a resilient safety culture.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
* Partner & Advise: Work closely with operational leaders to provide practical HSE guidance and support.
* Coach & Develop: Support and mentor teams to improve safety behaviours and systems.
* Drive Improvement: Identify and implement smarter, safer ways of working.
* Lead & Support: Participate in WHSE Committees and lead safety initiatives where required.
* Implement: Support the rollout of the Health & Safety Strategy and Business Unit Plans.
* Be Visible: Conduct regular safety observations to reinforce leadership and accountability.
* Embed Critical Risk Controls: Support and integrate critical risk initiatives into daily business practices.
* Facilitate Risk Assessments: Lead and promote risk assessment processes including formal risk assessments, JSAs and personal risk assessments.
* Support Change Management: Identify and guide HSE‑related change management processes.
* High‑Risk Work: Ensure contractor and high‑risk activities follow permit procedures.
* Maintain Risk Registers: Oversee and update risk registers to ensure accuracy and relevance.
* Develop SWMS: Create and revise Safe Work Instructions in consultation with workers, and Physio/allied health professionals.
* Lead Investigations: Conduct and participate in incident investigations using approved methodologies.
* Document & Communicate: Prepare incident reports, hazard alerts, and lessons learned bulletins.
* Regulatory Compliance: Notify authorities for notifiable events and manage follow‑up actions and communications.
* Implement & Improve Systems: Support and enhance HSE management systems and processes.
* Electronic SMS Subject Matter Expert: Govern Done Safe System, produce reports and analytics as required.
* Train & Mentor: Deliver and develop HSE training, coaching and mentoring to Logistics employees and contractors.
* Governance: Work closely with Compliance team on Chain of Responsibility and other relevant audits and inspections.
* Prepare for and participate in internal and external audits against relevant standards.
* Support operations with preparation, management and response to WorkSafe inspections, audits, statutory reports and prescribed incident notifications.
* Ensure Assurance Audits are completed in line with the Audit and Assurance Program and monitor closeout of WHS actions.
* Report: Develop and/or produce reports weekly/monthly to understand WHSE KPIs and key learnings.
* Statistical Reports: Identify WHS and injury trends and improvement opportunities for area of responsibility.
Skills Essential To The Job
* Risk Management experience including developing formal documented JSA and Risk Assessment.
* Incident Investigation experience in leading formal high consequence incidents, writing reports and sharing across different levels.
* Experience administering and managing computer‑based safety reporting systems including analytical and reporting experience.
* Experience working with business leaders to implement and continuously improve WHSE management processes.
* Experience in internal/external WHSE audits, as both a participant and an auditor.
* Minimum five years experience in a similar role within a multidisciplinary high‑risk organisation.
* Demonstrated understanding and expertise in relevant Safety/NHVR legislation (VIC/TAS Acts, Regulations and Codes).
* Experience working with international standards ISO 45001 OHS Management Systems and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.

Qualifications Required
* Diploma in Work Health & Safety with tertiary qualifications ideally.
* ICAM or equivalent incident investigation qualification.
* Nationally accredited WHS Auditor qualification.
Licences
* Car licence mandatory.
Special Conditions
* This is a salaried full time position working Monday to Fridays.
* There may be instances where work will be required to be performed outside the standard hours.
* Travel may be required.
Why Is This a Great Opportunity
Two roles: one in Melbourne and one in Tasmania. The position in TAS will require travel to 5 sites in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, and Davenport. Candidate can be located in any of these locations but will be required to travel to each. Melbourne’s role will be based in Port Melbourne and will be required to travel to TAS up to 5 days per month.
