Primary objective

As a senior member of the Special Education leadership team, provide initiative and educational leadership in administration,

planning, development and evaluation of policy, Curriculum and Pedagogy, wellbeing and educational programs in Palmerston

College Special Education setting. The Assistant Principal Special Education should inspire students, staff and community members

to optimise the learning of all students.

Context statement

Palmerston College – Driver Campus and Rosebery Campus are expanding to be a full comprehensive high school offering

education from Year 7 through to Year 12 by 2029, providing a seamless and inclusive learning environment that caters to a diverse

range of student interests and abilities. Our curriculum is guided by the Australian Curriculum and the South Australian Certificate

of Education for senior years students, and our school is designed to deliver the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and

Training, with all students on a NTCET pathway ensuring that students meet the academic standards required for successful

completion of secondary education. In addition to a strong academic curriculum, the school incorporates Vocational Education and

Training pathways, enabling students to gain practical skills and industry-recognised qualifications alongside their academic studies.

This dual focus equips students with both the knowledge and competencies necessary to pursue further education, training, or

direct entry into the workforce, fostering well-rounded, future-ready graduates.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Enact the school vision with a focus on a shared respectful culture that challenges, sets high expectations of both students and

teachers and drives Senior Teachers to build their instructional leadership skills so they can directly support all teachers to

improve classroom instruction, student engagement and capable and independent learners.

1. Drives the implementation of the vision and direction of the school and managing the resources in implementing clear

evidence-based improvement plans and policies especially in a Special Education setting.

1. Models and drives expectations for all staff to achieve high standards and build their capacity through professional

development and performance management.

1. Develop relationships with families and community groups to promote the school and its role in the wider community.
2. Work with other Assistant Principals and Principal to drive the development of education at the school and regional level.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Demonstrated capacity to model best practice teaching across Year 7 to Year 12 in a Special Education setting and contribute

to leading of learning in a Year 7 to Year 12 school environment.

2. Proven ability to build the capacity of self, others and high performing teams.

3. Demonstrated ability to manage, in partnership with the school Executive leadership team, innovation and change to achieve

school improvement at Driver Secondary School.

4. Demonstrated ability to lead key priorities areas of the school aligned to the department goals.

5. Demonstrated ability to build a shared culture of high expectations, while developing and maintaining effective interpersonal

and cross-cultural relationships within and beyond the Special Education as well as the school community.
