Primary objective
The Student Support Officer provides high level efficient and effective day to day delivery of student support for the Nhulunbuy High
School Boarding facility including providing administrative and program support, supervising and working with students and their
families/carers, providing transport and organising and supervising recreational activities.
Context statement
Dawurr Boarding (part of Nhulunbuy High School, a comprehensive secondary school in Northeast Arnhem Land) is a 40-bed facility that
provides a safe and culturally appropriate environment for remote Indigenous students seeking access to quality secondary programs
leading to expanded education and employment pathways through Nhulunbuy High School. The work environment is characterised by
extensive teamwork where intercultural knowledge and skills are paramount.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Support daily operations of Dawurr including working with students in programs, and supervising students on after-hours and/or
weekend recreational activities. This includes shift work and on-site sleepovers as per the current working roster.
1. Mentoring students in a range of life skills and competencies and undertaking independent living skills assessments (cooking, cleaning,
self-care, managing money etc.).
3. Proactively support the wellbeing and education of boarding students with a special focus on enhancing literacy, and maintaining
healthy relationships with others, at Dawurr and at school.
4. Build strong connections and engagement with families and communities of students.
5. Respond to critical or emergency incidents that may occur within the residential setting in accordance with organisational policies and
procedures, in a timely manner.
6. Work effectively with a team, and autonomously, to carry out tasks as required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven administrative and supervisory skills at a community/residential care level, including demonstrated discretion, confidentiality,
sensitivity and awareness of the legal implications on 'loco parentis'.
2. Demonstrated focus on enhancing educational outcomes for students with a special focus on enhancing literacy and academic
achievement.
3. Demonstrated high level interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, with demonstrated experience interacting effectively
with people from diverse cultures including students, parents, carers and the community.
4. Demonstrated ability to organise a range of suitable recreation activities for adolescents including providing appropriate engagement,
supervision and transport.
5. Proven ability to participate as part of a team in the spirit of positivity, reliability, trust and collaboration as well as work cooperatively
with senior management, staff members and peers in achieving school objectives and as part of the broader school community.
6. Proven ability to utilise computer programs to produce reports and correspondence and manage information.
Desirable
1. Formal qualifications in community services or similar at a certificate III or above and or previous experience in residential care in a
school boarding environment with Indigenous youth.
Further information
This position is open to male applicants only due to the requirement to provide overnight assistance and care to male students between
the ages of 12 and 18 years of age, within a dormitory environment. This position is advertised pursuant to s35 of the Anti-Discrimination
Act. Applicants will have or be able to obtain the following: a Working with Children clearance notice (Ochre Card), a current driver's
licence and be prepared to upgrade to medium rigid/MR vehicle, and a current First Aid certificate. Successful applicants are expected to
work a combination of day, evening, weekend and active night duty shifts and to travel throughout the Arnhem Region (including travel
by light aircraft).
