Action Research Centre Ltd (ARC) is a registered charity with the ACNC operating Australia-wide. Its charitable purpose is to conduct research in the areas of public welfare and in support of women, men and children experiencing family and domestic violence.
Our organisation recruits board members to ensure maximum impact. ARC strives to support excellence in board service and our directors are dedicated to our mission.
Board members champion exceptional board leadership and believe that every organisation needs a strong and effective board to fully realise its potential for good. In addition to the standard roles and responsibilities of a board member, directors are active advocates and ambassadors for ARC, fully engaged in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary to advance the mission.

Position
Job Title: Independent Non‑Executive Board Member
Serving on the ARC Board of Directors is an extraordinary opportunity for individuals passionate about strengthening leadership, governance, and equity within the not‑for‑profit sector. We seek committed, values‑driven directors who bring diverse perspectives and can actively contribute to the mission and strategic direction of the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
* Financial Oversight: Demonstrate sufficient financial literacy to read and interpret ARC’s financial statements and contribute to the board’s fiduciary oversight responsibilities.
* Board Participation: Attend twelve board meetings per year. Read all board papers in advance and come prepared to ask constructive questions, contribute independent judgement, and engage fully in discussions.
* Committee Engagement: Serve on at least one board committee and actively participate in committee work, including reviewing papers, providing feedback, and attending additional meetings when required.
* Resource Development: Support efforts to secure the financial resources needed for ARC to achieve its mission, including contributing to fundraising strategy, participating in engagement activities, and helping identify potential partners and supporters.
* Network Mobilisation: Leverage personal and professional networks to introduce ARC to prospective funders, partners, or collaborators. Board members are also encouraged to demonstrate their commitment by making an annual personal contribution at a level meaningful to them.
* Ambassadorship: Represent ARC with integrity in relevant communities and champion the mission, programmes, and services of the organisation. Advocate for ARC and its work where appropriate.
Term of Appointment
Board terms are three years in duration. Board members may serve up to three consecutive terms (a total of nine years).
Desired Skills and Expertise
We are currently seeking diverse leaders, with priority given to applicants from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, who can strengthen the board’s capability in the following areas:
* Advocacy Professional: An experienced advocacy leader who has developed and delivered advocacy strategies or campaigns in support of a social issue or cause. Ideal candidates have prior not‑for‑profit board experience or formal governance training.
* Advocacy in Migrant Communities: A well‑connected leader within migrant communities deeply aligned with our mission and able to leverage their networks in support of policy and systems change. Prior not‑for‑profit board experience or governance training is desirable.
