Position
Research Software Engineer position available for the project "Analytics for the Australian Grains Industry" (AAGI) within the Research School of Finance, Actuarial Studies and Statistics at the ANU College of Business and Economics. The successful candidate will develop and maintain R packages in statistical design and modelling, while also providing analytical support to projects relevant to the Australian grains industry.
This position will be part of a partnership between ANU and the Strategic Partners (Curtin University, University of Queensland, and University of Adelaide) of the Analytics for the Australian Grains Industry (AAGI).
The Person
We are seeking graduates with experience in statistics, data science, software engineering, computer science, machine learning, bioinformatics, quantitative biology, or closely related fields. Candidates must demonstrate strong scientific programming and software engineering skills, including the ability to design, develop, and maintain robust R packages and research software. A demonstrated commitment to reproducible, maintainable, and transparent workflows is essential. Candidates should also provide evidence of experience applying data science, statistical modelling, machine learning, or bioinformatics methods within research or applied settings, ideally alongside the development of reliable and well-documented software tools that support these analyses.
The ideal candidate will have a background in statistics, data science, computer science, or a related discipline, with strong programming and software engineering skills, experience building maintainable and well-documented code, and a demonstrated commitment to reproducible and transparent workflows. To be considered to be appointed at ANU Officer 6, candidates should demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain R packages under guidance, including contributing to package development, documentation, and maintenance tasks.
To be considered to be appointed at ANU Officer 7, candidates should demonstrate the ability to independently develop and maintain R packages, including designing package structure, implementing functionality, and managing ongoing maintenance with minimal guidance.
The candidate should have working rights and be available to start by August 2026.
Desirable Requirements
* Experience in mixed models, experimental design, image analytics, machine learning, transcriptomics, or molecular phenotyping.
* Experience in the biological or agricultural sciences.
