Curtin University invites applications for the role of Senior Technical Officer, a key position designed to support the operational excellence of our Kalgoorlie Campus's technical facilities, supporting Western Australian School of Mines (WASM). This role offers the unique opportunity to join a team dedicated to supporting cutting-edge teaching and research in the heart of Australia's mining industry.

This is a Monday to Friday position - no weekends - giving you the freedom to enjoy the unique lifestyle that Kalgoorlie offers. In addition to Curtin’s generous leave entitlements, if you are required to travel to Perth, you will receive an extra 15 hours (or 2 days) of annual leave each year.

About the Role:
As a Senior Technical Officer, you will primarily focus on supporting Metallurgical Engineering and Mining Engineering activities. You will be responsible for providing technical support and associate services for teaching and/or research programs, and co-ordinate the day-to-day requirements of the laboratory and workshop areas.

You’ll prepare materials and ensure laboratory facility resources are prepared in advance and well organised for teaching and research activities. You will supervise and provide technical instruction and guidance to staff and students, including guidance on the design and development of experimental processes using relevant equipment and will maintain general and specialised laboratories and equipment, undertaking safety checks, servicing, and repair.

No two days are the same, this is an active and engaging role where you will be able to put your strong problem-solving skills to the test.

If you are not currently located Kalgoorlie, not to worry, relocation support will be considered for the right candidate.

Your responsibilities will include:

- Coordinate the day-to-day requirements of the laboratories, ensuring effective space allocation for classes and/or research projects.
- Ensure the operations and users of the laboratories comply with national and state legislation and regulations relevant to its activities and University requirements.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement.
- Conduct and ensure all staff and students participate in safety inductions and that health and safety criteria are always adhered to.
- Prepare materials and ensure laboratory facilities are prepared in advance and well organised for teaching and/or research activities.
- Supervise and provide technical instruction and guidance to staff and students in class, including guidance on the design and development of experimental processes using relevant equipment.
- Develop and maintain safe work procedures for all aspects of operations including safety, hazardous substances, equipment and workspaces.
- In collaboration with relevant academic staff maintain undergraduate laboratory class procedures and workbooks.
- Maintain general and specialised laboratories and equipment, undertaking safety checks, servicing and repair.
- Monitor and initiate ordering of materials, consumables and equipment so supplies are maintained.
- Coordinate Minor New Works to provide appropriate services required.
- Grant access and liaise with Security to allow students into restricted areas.

Who we are looking for – Selection Criteria:
We are looking for a proactive and dynamic professional with a solid background in technical operations or laboratory activities. You will have a passion for safety, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.

Essential Criteria:
Our ideal candidate will demonstrate:

- A relevant degree in Metallurgy, Mining Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or a related field, or substantial experience in a senior technical or laboratory role.
- Exceptional organisational skills, with a keen ability to manage multiple tasks, projects and the operational requirements of a laboratory facility efficiently.
- Demonstrated experience in the design, conduct of and the setting up of complex experiments/equipment and systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and commitment to ensuring, Occupational Safety and Health practices and regulations are followed.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills with proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team as well as the ability to supervise the work of others.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a variety of stakeholders, as well as the ability effectively communicate information and provide instruction others in an educational setting.
- The ability to approach challenges with a solutions-focused mindset, demonstrating resilience and creativity in problem-solving.
- Demonstrated effective written communication skills with the ability to produce safety documents, correspondence, records, instructions and procedures which are clear, accurate and concise.

Desirable:

- Experience in the higher education sector.
- Experience in ChemAlert or ChemWatch.
- First Aid certification and/or a forklift license will also be highly regarded.
