About the opportunity

An exciting opportunity to join DPIRD's Detector Dog Unit as a Detector Dog Handler, undertaking inspection and compliance activities that safeguard WA's primary industries.

We are seeking to establish a pool of suitably qualified applicants for the role of Senior Quarantine Inspector (Dog Handler).

There is currently one (1) permanent full-time position available for immediate filling. This vacancy is based at the Perth Domestic Airport and is a shift work position, with applicable shift penalties paid in addition to the advertised base salary.

As a Senior Quarantine Inspector (Dog Handler), you will screen air and freight pathways, including passengers, luggage, and mail arriving from interstate and ensure it complies with state biosecurity legislation.

You will be part of the Checkpoints and Surveillance team who ensure frontline operations of the Detector Dog Unit are undertaken to the highest standards. You will deploy Detector Dogs in the above search environments to maximise their operational capabilities and manage their health, welfare and safety.

Travel within the Perth Metropolitan area and occasional travel to regional offices may be required.

We are seeking candidates who have a:

* demonstrated knowledge and experience interpreting and applying acts, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines;
* demonstrated experience and/or knowledge in animal handling, training, and/or associated management and welfare of working dogs;
* demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people using excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.

The assessment process and stages involved in selecting the most suitable applicants for Senior Quarantine Inspector positions are summarised below:

* Applications are submitted online and assessed by the selection panel against the advertised criteria.
* Shortlisted applicants will be required to complete online psychological profiling and cognitive ability assessments.
* Shortlisted applicants will attend an interview, generally held in the Perth metropolitan area. Regional or interstate applicants may be interviewed via MS Teams.
* Applicants progressing to the remaining stages of assessment will be required to attend in person in the Perth metropolitan area and will be responsible for any travel and accommodation costs incurred.
* Shortlisted applicants will undergo a Functional Fitness Assessment relevant to the inherent requirements of the role.
* Referee checks will be conducted for selected applicants.
* Final stages will be the endorsement of the process outcome and applicants to be advised.
* As vacancies arise, appointments will be made from the pool and successful applicants will be required to commence the training program.

Employment Conditions and Additional Information

DPIRD is an Emergency Management Agency and all employees may be required to work or travel during, or outside of, normal business hours to assist with incidents and emergencies.

Am I eligible to apply?

To be eligible for a permanent appointment to the Western Australian public sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency status in Australia. To be eligible for a fixed term or a casual appointment you must have documentary evidence of your entitlement to live and work in Australia for the period as part of your application.

You will be required to provide a current National Police Certificate (police clearance) before commencing employment. If not currently held, this must be acquired prior to appointment at applicant's expense.

Special Requirements for this position. Applicants must:

* Satisfy requirements of a Functional Fitness Assessment to ensure mobility standards for operational readiness are met.
* Undertake and satisfactorily complete a psychometric assessment.
* Satisfy requirements of Detector Dog Handler training by the end of probationary period. (Note: If required, the probation period may be extended to accommodate the availability of training provider/s, assessments, and reviews).
* Hold a current and valid Western Australian "C-A" driver's licence, or equivalent is required (if not currently held, must be acquired prior to commencement at applicant's expense).
* Be able to satisfy security clearance for an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC).

This pool will be valid for a period of twelve (12) months following finalisation of the process and may be used to fill other same/similar permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies with the possibility of extension or permanency at locations listed in this advert. Please note, being appointed to the pool does not guarantee you a placement to a position.
