The Director of National Parks (the Director) is responsible for six national parks, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, 58 Australian Marine Parks and the Heard Island and McDonald Islands Marine Reserve established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Parks Australia is the federal park agency that supports the Director, and they are a division of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (the Department). The key duties of the position include Kakadu National Park is seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Project Officer to lead the delivery of interpretation projects, programs, and events across the park. Under the limited direction of the Tourism and Visitor Services Manager, the Senior Project Officer is responsible for providing strategic advice, direction, and oversight to ensure interpretation and education outcomes align with the Kakadu Interpretation Strategy and broader park priorities. The role plays a key leadership function in delivering high-quality, culturally appropriate interpretation that supports joint management outcomes, strengthens visitor understanding of Country, and enhances Kakadu's reputation as a world-class visitor destination. Key responsibilities Lead the planning and delivery of interpretation projects and programs in line with the Kakadu Interpretation Strategy. Engage with Traditional Owners and key stakeholders to support interpretation outcomes aligned with the Tourism Master Plan 2020-2030 and joint management priorities. Work with internal communications and project teams to develop guidelines, tools, procedures, and content that support best-practice interpretive outcomes across the park. Provide leadership and direction on the development and review of interpretive and educational resources, including oversight of work delivered by the Interpretation and Education Officer. Lead event and festival programming across Kakadu National Park, including annual festivals, seasonal guided programs, pop-up events, national celebrations, and supported third-party events. Ensure interpretation and event programs are culturally appropriate, thematically coherent, accessible, and aligned with visitor experience objectives. Mentor, supervise, and support staff and contractors in a remote and cross-cultural environment, fostering capability, performance, and professional development. Build interpretation capability across the Tourism and Visitor Services team through training, mentoring, and professional development initiatives. Promote and support the Traditional Owners vision for the future of the park by facilitating respectful exchange of knowledge between Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff, community members, and the public.
